    Hi folks,

I'm fairly new to the home theater world. In the last two weeks, I purchased the list of components below. I'm hoping you guys can point me to the right direction for the most optimal set up. If there are more than one way to do this, I'm all ears. I don't have plans on getting digital cable yet as my carrier is not Comcast, and I heard this competitor is horrible. So I will be watching mostly DVDs or playing PS2. Oh, and help me pick out the correct cables to buy as well.

    Display
    42" Hitachi 42HDT52

    Inputs/Outputs
    - CableCard Interface (1)
    - IEEE-1394 (1)
    - HDMI (2)
    - Wideband Component Video Inputs (2)
    - DV Input side (1)
    - USB Input side (1)
    - S-Video Inputs rear/side (2/1)
    - AV Inputs rear/side (4/1)
    - Antenna Inputs (2)
    - AV Output with S-Video (1)
    - Optical Digial Audio Output (1)
    - Infra-Red Outputs (2)
    - Subwoofer Output (1)
    - Fixed/Variable Audio Output (1)

    DVD player
    Sony HD-Conversion DVD Player DVPNS70H

    Input/Outputs
    - A/V outputs RCA/composite (1)
    - S-video outputs (1)
    - Component video output (1)
    - Digital coaxial output (1)
    - Digital optical output (1)

    Receiver
    Onkyo HTR520 6.1 Receiver with Onkyo SKS-HT240 6.1 Speakers
    - Component Video
    - Digital optical input (3)
    - Digital coaxial input (1)
    - CD in audio analog input (1)
    - Video 1: S-video, composite video, and audio inputs/outputs
    - Video 2: S-video, composite video, and audio inputs
    - DVD In: S-video, composite video, and audio inputs
    - Monitor out: S-video, composite video

    Gaming
PlayStation 2 SCPH-70012: the really thin one
    - AV MULTI OUT connector (1)
    - DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL ) connector (1)

    PC
I'm thinking about hooking up my PC. Currently I have a PCI card with a VGA out. I'm assuming I need to updated the Video card to get that working?

    Thanks!!!

    Welcome to the Forum, Chikai!

This is a really basic system; it should be no problem to look at the manuals and make your connections.

Since you have component video capability, use those connections. If your receiver doesn’t have component video for the DVD player, then go with S-video for all your video connections.

No, but while the TV has an HDMI input you don't list an HDMI output on anything.

As Wayne said, your DVD and TV manuals should have a diagrams showing how you'd hook this up. You have several options but I'd connect DVD to TV via Component video (S-vid works as well) and to the receiver via the optical output (or use the digital coax if you want to avoid getting the optical cable).

Connecting the PC, look for a converter/adapter that goes SVGA to component or S-video. I think they exist, I know they exist to go the other way.

Experimentation is in order to see what is really best between 480i component Video, 480p component Video, 720p HDMI/DVI, and 1080i HDMI/DVI.....

In theory digital video is better, but in the real world any of the above suggestions can be best with any particular source / display combo.
