I think alot of people have unique opinions here, but I'll go ahead and throw mine in. I have both DVD's and use them (in addition to an HD generator) for calibrating. I use the Avia more because it seems to have friendlier navigation, and it has a couple helpful patterns DVE doesn't (y/c delay and green & red flashing colorbars, for example). It's not without it's faults, though, the major one being the navigation has bugs on some DVD players. About a third of the DVD players I've tried it on had trouble, and there wasn't a difference with the cost of the player.
DVE's audio test tones are superior, and you can count on it to be accurate and playable on every DVD player once you get used to the navigation.
