hello to all... just found this great site.

i am building a theatre in part of my basement.

my video guy is starting today to run wires/etc/etc.

i received a full proposal of equipment from him, and want/need opinions - here is what he is suggesting

    luxeon hd dlp cinema projector
perfect vu electric roll down 106'' screen
    harmon kardon 7200 receiver
    phillips 9638a progressive dvd/sach player
sonance cinema ultra 11 ceiling speakers
    '' '' '' '' surrounds
    '' '' '' '' sub woofer consisting of
1 sonance watt rack mount amp and
2 sonance in wall sub woofers

    my questions/observations are on

luxeon - see no feedback on these units- good/bad?? - i think i would rather spend another couple of $$ and upgrade to a projector that has the new mustang chip.. or maybe like an infocus 7200 unit??

harmon kardon 7200 - the reports on this look ok, but it is not thx certified.. should i have him upgrade to the harmon k. 8000 that is thx certified?? or another unit

as to the screen/dvd, i have no clue and need help. i have sonance speakers thruout the house and am pleased with the sounds... unless there is something that is better

the room in the basement, will have no windows, hence completely dark.

thanks for all replies in advance

    ron

    Ron:

Can you share with us the general magnitide of your budget or the equipment cost estimate from the installer. I'm not anti-contract installers, but I have a sneaking suspicion in your case that you may be paying quite a bit more for this package compared to what you would pay by ordering the individual components via internet dealers ... we may be able to help you cut equip costs by nearly 50% and get equal or better performance. At the very least, we can help with with info to negotiate a better deal with your installer.

Re your projector ... what is the model no? Are we talking about the Luxeon D520P? Not many people here have experience with Luxeon PJs, they are almost never discussed and are probably re-badged PJs made by another mfr. When a custom mfr. does this, there is a huge markup. The MSRP for the above Luxeon model is $3900. This is a simple 4:3 XGA PJ. It likely has the basic 2x color wheel. You can easily find a comparable unit by a major mfr. for under $2000.

Yes, IMHO ... you should be looking at a newer PJ, such as the ScreenPlay 7200 (InFocus). The Mustang chip is dramatic improvement if it fits into your budget.

Similar substitutions could be made for many of the other components on your shopping list.

This response is not intended to trouble you, but to suggest that you may want to do a little more research before final check writing ... you can save a small fortune.
