Hello! I have an older Onkyo HT R510 Home Theater system and am purchasing a Vizio E370VL LCD along with a Vizio VBR120 Blu-Ray player. Nothing top-of-the-line but for now it will have to work. I also have a Direct TV HD receiver that will need to be hooked up with everything and I am dreading getting it all to work. Right now of course, everything goes through the receiver but I want the 1080 and have no HDMI inputs on my receiver. I have not even started this project (Saturday is D-Day) and do not have a clue how to get it done and have everything work. I can send you the number of inputs and outs on my receiver if you need them, I know there are two optical "in's" but no "out's". Plenty of other "ins" and "outs" too but wires and where they go are NOT my specialty! Can anyone help me with this? Right now I have a power cord and composite line coming from the old TV and something tells me with the new one this won't be the case at all...

Hook the BR player and DTV HD receiver to the display with HDMI cables for the video.

Then hook the DTV receiver and Vizio BR player to the Onkyo with an optical or coaxial digital cable for the audio.

You will have to make the correct settings on the BR players setup menu to sent the video through the HDMI cable and the audio through the digital cable.

You won't be able to access the new audio formats found on BR discs this way because your receiver doesn't support HDMI and the Vizio doesn't have 7.1 channel analog outputs (but the Onkyo does have 5.1 analog in's). You will also have to change the input on the display when you change from tv to BR. You could hook both the DTV and BR to the Onkyo with component cables and let it do the switching but hooking them both up straight to the display with HDMI cables should give you the best picture possible.

And don't spend a lot on cables and wires. The markup on that stuff is rediculous. Monoprice.com is a good place to get quality cables on the cheap but I doubt they would arrive by D-Day.

Thanks so much for your help, it seems, in black and white, not to be so complicated to get it done. I realize that until I upgrade to a new receiver I won't be able to get the full benefits of the 1080 "stuff" but knowing I can still keep the home theater sound is good for now. Thanks again for your help, I'll let you know how it all turns out and whether I have any hair left when all is said and done!

Just wanted to say thanks for your help, I got everything hooked up with no real problems. The only problem I had is with DirectTV and not getting the HD signal. So, I have not been able to see the HD feature yet but that's not due to the hook-up. I was happy to get rid of all those old cables, so much neater in the back! Thanks again for your help, DTV technician is coming out Thursday morning to hopefully resolve the problem.
