need help getting to digital input

i know my equipment is not the newsest stuff but I cannot figure this out.

i have 2 receivers. RCA-HTS5000 and Kenwood VR-209.

I want to use the Kenwood VR-209 for the simple resason it has the speakes A/B option that will let me use my floor speakers when I want music only.

I had the RCA HTS-5000 getting it's input via optical cord from my Samsung UN50F6400AF (TV). i would set the receiver to "SAT-OPT" and I got sound out of all my speakers. Cable, smart TV apps... basically any sound that would normally come out of my factory speakers would play in 5.1 if I wanted them too.

now i have the kenwood VR-209 there, hooked up via optical cord. here's where it gets really funky...

at first, i was able to use the input selector knob to get to the input "video 3' this is what it shows on back of unit where optical plugs in. i was never able to get surround sound, no matter the source.

then i used the remote and pushed the "video" button. now i cannot access and of the video inputs (1, 2 or 3) buy my sound comes through when in "DVD" input, but still no surround.

Please help, im super lost with this!
