Kickstarter backers got exclusive access to a number of free streaming episodes... I can still access mine, but I don't know if it's forever or if they will disappear at some point. It included the first two aired episodes: Invaders from the Deep and Revenge of the Mysterons from Mars. Both were stop-motion puppet animation films in the style of Thunderbirds or Fireball XL5. They were compiled from episodes of a British TV series, I believe.
While it was certainly fascinating to see how the show has evolved, those early episodes were... really not that good. The riffers (just Joel and Crow) would often sit in silence for several minutes, and the riffs they did make were mostly pretty obvious and unimaginative. Joel says that back then they were actually worried viewers might get annoyed if they interrupted the movies too much. There were almost none of the show's famous pop culture references, maybe because they were afraid people wouldn't recognize them. The Mad Scientist characters weren't on the show yet.
I watched both episodes all the way through, but mainly because I thought the movies themselves were pretty entertaining.
There are plenty of opportunities for extras on this set, though. They did quite a few behind-the-scenes things for backers, and even a mini-telethon on the last night of the Kickstarter. And I'm sure there's plenty more we haven't seen. Then again, we're talking 14 full-length movies for the season itself.
A question tied in with this series...was there a movie in this collaboration of films throughout the years that aired at one time called "the Gold Guitar" (1966)? It's an old country music movie of that era that I had heard aired on such a type of program. Would love to have this film ...
I heard it was on some horror VHS tape collection back in 1992 but hasn't seen the light of day since. Any help would be appreciated.
