Ok, so all this time I've been thinking you guys were crazy with this DVD rot thing. I thought surely it had something to do with how you were storing your discs.

    Evidently, I stand corrected. :b

My Touch of Evil DVD, which used to play fine, now goes all pixilated around chapter 12.

Has anyone else encountered this problem with this particular title?

My Victor/Victorial - Original Broadway Cast DVD also died recently. 2 months ago I started to realised it is not playing smoothly, then last week the whole upper layer of the disc just can not be played at all.

How??? Is there anyway I can "repair" the disc?

Rain, I had to return two Touch of Evil dvds until I found one that worked. This was way back on release date so I'm guessing there was a problem with the first batch.

    Probably the answer.

Rain, try the disc in another player. Or, when the problem occurs, press Stop and then press Play again. Let the player reinitialize and see what happens. That could be the problem too.

The disc wouldn't even load in the DVD player on the PC.

However, something odd did occur right from the day I first bought it (which was very close to the release date): It froze up every time I chose the "Play" option. I had to start it from the Chapter menu.

Oh well, hopefully when I get around to replacing it, it should be one from a newer batch.

Not bad, all things considered. Over 325 DVDs and only one that died.

That's a very good rate. Bad disc, then. The vendor should replace it.

I doubt it. I've had it far too long.

In any case, I think the vendor is out of business if I'm correctly remembering where I bought it. [IMG]

Buddy, it's late at night. Only weird people stay up during the early morning hours talking about DVDs.

Have you looked at the disc's playing surface under good lighting? See if there's a smudge or mark of some kind. (I know, it's a bummer when you consider the film itself and how much the disc costs.)

Geez, Jack, you're taking this harder than I am. It's just one DVD. Shit happens.

Believe me I checked it and rechecked it. It's toast.

Let us grieve the loss and move on. [IMG]

Write Universal and tell them that it's defective. Since it's still an in-print title, I'll bet they'll replace it. Anchor Bay has replaced a couple of discs of mine that went bad (from defective pressings) well over a year after I bought them.

My Fair Lady from WB did this. On 3 players (DVD-Rom, RP-91, Sony DVP-S560) so it's not a player/disc thing. Reminds me, I should call WB's customer service...
