When I bought the 36" Wega, I immediately set up the 32" Toshiba in the bedroom. Also, when I 'audition' equipment, the wife joins me. She likes music and movies, why not?
When I see something I like, I explain to her in everyday language why I prefer one over the other, and also solicit her opinion.
I don't make our shared listening/living room look like something from technoworld, for two reasons.
It would ruin the looks of the room, and as much as I love HT, without a dedicated room, it's a lot of effort (and $$) for the amount of improvement gained.
Besides, I do have a life outside of HT.
Soliciting her opinion though, has to be the biggest factor in making HT improvements a pleasant experience in our home.
In the end we are synchronized, she hits the button on microwave for the popcorn when I hit the button on the remote. I can't ask for more than that!
I would not want to her to make the final decision on what changes I do make to my equipment, anymore than she would want me to tell her what dress to buy. But we do offer opinions. It's taken me more than one relationship to learn, it's not just giving your acknowledgement, it's giving your attention that's important.

Dale,
I defintely agree. My wife really doesn't care what I buy as long as we can pay the bills and save something for retirement (whatever that is, I won't be 30 for a few more months!). She lets me build whatever speakers I want and doesn't even notice the fact that I don't put grills on them. She let me pick out the TV I wanted even though it was more expensive (Elite 510). She's even started adjusting to load explosions.
And to top it all off, she's 5'2", 105lbs., blonde haired, blue eyed, and got a set of abs that any man (including me) would die to have! :)

It's threads like these that make me really appreciate my wife. So here's my nomination for HT Wife of the Year:
1. Goes shopping for HT gear with me, including random sessions at dealers to check out new CD players and listening to the same test tracks over and over again (AND hearing the differences in each player).
2. Loves our HT gear. Quote: "I can't decide which I like more--the Tivo or our Paradigms."
3. Eagerly anticipating the arrival or our new baby--TOSHIBA 50H81 16:9 RPTV.
4. Hates armoires.
5. Loves DTS sound.
6. Can't relate to other women who don't relate to music and movies.
7. Hates analog cable.
8. Loves digital satellite.
9. Hates interlace artifacts in DVDs.
10. Spotted the "ghost line" problem in Tosh H80 series TVs before I did.
11. Thinks anechoic chambers are cool.
I'm sure there's more that I'm taking for granted. Oh, and we have a HT-friendly cat, Mr. Fergus, who never scratches anything either. HT Pet of the Year, perhaps?
I sympathize with all you guys who don't have HT wives. Thankfully, I can't empathize.

I nominate my wife for wife of the year for these reasons:
1. She looks at any piece of HT equipment I bring up on the Web
2. She appreciates the difference between CDs and LPs
3. She picked out our Martin Logan speakers. She wanted the larger Ascents, but I chose the smaller Aerius i's.
4. She picked out our TV. She wanted a 61", but I chose the smaller 50".
5. She loves the Pronto.
6. She asked for a TiVo for our anniversary.
7. She bought The Killer Criterion when it was still at Best Buy.
8. She supports my decision to build a separate 2ch system for my office, and gave me a budget of $5k.
9. When I bought the Sunfire Cinema Grand amplifier, she was disappointed. She wanted the Krell KAV-500.
10. Her favorite HT gear manufacturer is McIntosh.
There are other reasons. :)

Well I wouldn't say my fiance gets a nod FOR or NOT for "spouse of the year". Here are her "Good sides":
We are looking at building our 1st house and I told her that I want a full basement (why they build half ones I have NO idea!) to build my "ManTown Theater". She agreed with the agreement that she gets a Garden Tub in the Master Suite. HMMMMMMM $3K tub in exchange for a $20k system?? Sounds fair! Also as long as NOTHING that effects her is sacrificed she doesn't care meaning I better NOT use our vacation $$$ to pay for the system! Lastly SHE really likes HDTV's and pulled ME into going shopping for one about 6 weeks ago! We are opting to wait to see how big the new house's living room will be so I get the BIGGEST one!! :)
Now the bad: I asked her for a Sony RM2000 LCD remote for Xmas so that she didn;t have to fight with all my remotes. Well after 18 mths and 30 lessons she STILL has NO idea what to do!!! I even have it programmed for 1 button FULL setup!!! Christ I taught her 13 year old in 2 mins and he gets it right every time now! UUUGGGHHH!!!!!
Well that's my story!

Here is the viewpoint of the HT-adverse wife:
1. She assumes that the only purpose of your HT system and HDTV is so you can watch porno in greater detail and clarity, with all the sound effects. She assumes that as soon as she leaves the house, you open your secret stash of porno and go to it. I guarantee you, if a single, innocuous Playboy disc is ever found, you will never, ever convince your wife that your precious HT is anything more than a home porno theater.
2. She views all of your HT gear as ugly. Even the speakers made of real wood that try to be attractive are ugly. Your speaker stands are ugly. A lot of HT stuff is black, which is ugly. The yellow cones of your speakers are stupid and ugly. All those wires are ugly. Your sub is particularly ugly, offensive and viewed as completely unecessary. "Are you a child and need to hear boom, boom, boom." Ha ha ha. "Honey, can't we put that hideous thing in the closet or utility room or something?"
3. Your HT gear is considered a complete, utter, and indefensible waste of money.
4. If you think you will get a dedicated HT room in "your next house," forget it. Sure you want your inner sanctum where you can get away, listen to music, watch movies, fiddle with your system and think. Ha ha ha. By the time you get into your next house, these plans will be changed and your room will be a "sitting room" packed with unconfortable furniture, funny looking lamps, and dried flowers. The only space you have a shot at is a small corner of the garage.

All right folks, please don't take this too seriously, I'm trying to be funny. I'll bet, however, that some here can identify with one or more of the above. Fortunately, none of the above applys to MY wife.

I gave up my car habit (I was buying or selling a car at least once a year) for HT. So, comparatively, my HT hobby is cheap and bearable.
Don't ever give up and keep building your HT!
