He has 2 hard drives both masters on the two IDE channels. He's set up his dvd slaved to the primarary IDE and his burner to the secondary IDE. Using the program, NTI, he finds that the program tells him it can't find either the source or the destination drives. He's able to play music on either the dvd or burner. Suggestions as to what he should do?

Put both hard drives on the primary IDE channel, make one of them a slave. Put the DVD and CD burner on the secondary.

What operating system is it running? He may need to install the latest ASPI drivers anyways. Look here for the latest ASPI drivers on Adaptec's site:

Also, the burning software may be too old, and not support the CD writer. I had that problem with CDRWin 3.8a and my Liteon 32x burner. Upgrading to CDRWin 3.9a fixed my problem.

He's using NTI Pro, latest incarnation. Both the DVD (Sony 10x i think) and burner an HP (don't recall the model...maybe a couple of years old) seem to function independently. Running WinXP. I'd have thought it would be a prudent move upon his part to put both devices as slaves. The computer is your proverbial frankenstein made from cannibalized parts (866 pent with 760 whatever megs). Myself, I've not looked at NTI, and to a large extent have left him to figure things out on his own. Perhaps it is a software setup issue? Rob, your thoughts on the ASPI driver issue that Max brought up?

I've never had a problem with the ASPI layer on any machine I've built or used, but what Max is saying is correct.
