Just got this email, thought it might be of interest to some of you:
Hey Everyone! It's Miller Time! :)
I am very excited (ecstatic is more like it!) to inform you that the
My So-Called Life DVD Box Set is going to become a reality.
"How soon," you ask? You'll be amazed to learn that you can actually
place a pre-order now and reserve a copy with a $20 deposit. BMG has
agreed to license the DVD to AnotherUniverse.com as the exclusive source.
I, too, am amazed at how quickly things have progressed. To all those
who doubted this would actually happen, I say, "don't doubt the power
    of prayer." :-P
    Here is a little information:
    1) The complete set will be issued on DVDs with bonus material, special
collector's packaging, booklet, etc. Specifics will be coming to
    www.mscl.com/dvd soon!
    2) There will be no region coding. It will play anywhere. International
    shipping is available.
    3) The DVD is available exclusively online, at
    http://www.anotheruniverse.com/mscldvd
    4) You can pay by credit card, check, or money order.
    5) I believe that there is a phone number to order from (on their site).
    6) For those who already own episodes 1-3, you can buy a set without that
    disc.
    7) The price with all episodes is $99.98.
    8) The price for episodes 4-19 is $89.98 (the set will be identical,
minus disc one. You can insert the old disc into the new set
package – but not the holder).
    9) These prices may go down given a high number of pre-orders, as
production costs can be spread out over a greater number of units.
    10) There is a lot more info at http://www.anotheruniverse.com/mscldvd .
Important: The number of box sets manufactured will depend on the number
of pre-orders received. There is no guarantee that there will more after
the pre-order period. There is no “evil” strategy behind this; it's just
that the set is being manufactured in response to our demand. In fact,
we are the only reason it is being pressed at all. The estimated turnaround
time is 3 months. However, if extra bonus material is located before
production, and it is worthwhile, it is possible that this could be
extended so that the extra material can be included.
This is pretty much the first time that I can remember that a DVD is
being made solely in response to overwhelming fan demand and believe me,
your signatures and hard work made all of the difference. There were almost
4,500 pre-pre-order signatures, so AnotherUniverse.com is just trying to
make sure that they don't make too many or too few. It would suck to make
4,500 copies, if only 2,500 bought the set.
Besides that, I will post more information as it becomes available,
including information on extras, sneak peaks of the packaging etc.
I know when I originally wrote to everyone, I had quoted a lower $ amount
for the DVD box set. I had underestimated the number of discs that would be
needed for all of the episodes, as well as some of the costs for licensing
the material. I still believe that the price is fair, and in line with
other similar sets. The set will be made to have special features for
ardent fans and collectors… do I really have to convince you why to get
this? It’s all 19 episodes of the show! :)

This all seems rather strange. Now don't get me wrong I am very interested in these episodes coming to DVD but this offer seems sort of....."shady"? maybe is the word. I'll wait until I hear more about it and I do not have to put a deposit down. This will keep me from agreeing to purchase an item that I do not know the quality of. I like to read reviews and the such before making decisions...especially $100 ones.

Richard was just posting an e-mail that a lot of fans just received from MSCL.com. They've been petitioning to get the series on DVD.
I'm putting in my pre-order now. [IMG]

    Sorry for the misunderstanding Eric!:b

Just to assure you, no I don't work for any of those companies, I'm just a fan of the show!

I simply thought that there may be others out there (unaware of the petition to get the full series on dvd) who might be interested in this release.

    Great news!

One fly in the ointment though: the AnotherUniverse page mentions that the discs will have "4-5" episodes per disc. Unless that's handled very carefully, that's an awful lot of 4:3 material with 5.1 sound per disc, and could result in some nasty compression artefacts. (It's also quite a grainy series, judging by the episodes on the existing disc, and that doesn't help the compression....)

Hopefully they'll go with four discs with four episodes on each.

    Richard,

Sorry also for the misunderstanding on my part. I should have read more carefully. I'm glad you brought it to my attention, but I am just a little worried about the quality as I have stated above.

Wow! Potential UK customers should be aware that AnotherUniverse are charging a staggering forty dollars in postage! Compare that to my regular supplier, who charge less than ten dollars to send up to seven discs by DHL courier (taking less than a week, compared to AnotherUniverse's tardy "4-6 week" delivery time). Outrageous! This will definitely be the one and only time I'll be buying from them!!

Where do you find out the non-US shipping rates?

I love this show, but am also leery of the non-refundable deposit, sketchy episode count and packaging details, and transfer quality from a company that I know nothing about. I think I'll be waiting for a lot more details before even thinking about this one.

    it says:
"When pre-ordering please enter Coupon Code:MSCL so that you are not charged shipping on your pre-order deposit."
    did you do that?!!
EDIT: Oh I see what you mean! For overseas orders it forces you to pay for shipping at the time of ordering...

    Richard-
I have been in a similar situation to this before:
I ordered the Brit version of Queer As Folk,
    which is exclusively distributed
    in the US through C1TV.
Never heard of them? Me neither!
But, I pre-ordered and got everything to my satisfaction.
The DVDs we're over priced, but then this was the only
thing C1TV ever funded themselves, so they had no
cushion of LARGE volumes of product being sold
    to lower costs.
BMG has stated over and over that
    My So-Called Life is/was a poor
seller on VHS, and they don't see that improving
for DVD, since some people's enthusiasm for the
show will wane the more the show becomes nothing
    more than a distant memory.
Keep in mind, that while the show had AMAZING writing,
and the caliber of the show in general tops 90% of
what is out there regardless of genre,
    I suspect that the
    "target audience" was teenage girls.
They have grown up, just like Clare Danes,
and may not so eager as they once were to
see Jared Leto "He so cute!" on DVD again
    and again and again.
So, I can see why this DVD set is being handled this
way, and I can see why we are going to have a pay
    more for it. Lower volume,
less risk of over stock collecting dust,
    but higher price per unit.
Remember, there are only 4500 people who signed
the petition to buy it. That didn't even commit
them to buy, and people will sign anything!

    Cheers for the explaination Mark!
I guess you saw my post before I edited it!
I realised (after I'd read all about the story behind the collapse of BMG video on the MSCL website) that my question about the release strategy was kind of redundant but thank-you anyway [IMG]

I've placed my order but emailed customer service to ensure that they verify that the shipping amount will be taken into consideration when the final amount is charged.

The Christmas episode is episode 15, So-Called Angels . It doesn't look like you'll be able to buy the discs separately though, so it's all or nothing!

I remember this show! I liked Claire Danes, but hated Jared Leto because he was such a pretty-boy. Now that he's done things like Fight Club, Requiem For A Dream, and the upcoming Panic Room, though, I think highly of him.
