I just got the Panny 53WX42 53" HDTV. It's a great set, but I've noticed after being on for an hour or so, it will give off this smell. It smells like that "new tv" smell and a slight burning smell. I can smell it from the other room. Is this smell normal because it's new, or should I exchange it for another one?
:confused:

I wouldn't worry about it, it's just the generated heat "burning" off residue on the CRTs or heatsinks. It'll go away in time.
Now if smoke comes out of the set, then I'd start to worry! :)

I love that smell! All you'll get by replacing the set is the smell for a longer period of time. Hey, that's not a bad idea :)

Hey! I'm not getting the smell! Does that mean I got ripped off??? Maybe I need to get the old olfactory receptors checked out! :D

I like to smell new things. Such as a pack of magic cards right when you first open it, I really liked the smell of the Band of Brothers interior of it's case, and the LOTR 4 disc has a good smell to it too... that new manufactured cardboard is probably what's good...

Man, try this first.......have a couple of bottles of Sam Adams and some nachos. If you don't smell anything within 45 minutes, I'd see an ear, nose and throat specialist right away! :D

Ahhhhh! The smell of brand new electronics! I love it!
Ahhhhh! Exactly!
My set has that "new product smell" as well. I think I'll sleep next to it until it wears off. :D
The only thing that emits a nicer scent is nature, after a pleasant spring early-evening shower. Ahhhhhhhhh! :)

Yeah, you're right, Shana. Hadn't even noticed Vin's post. :laugh:
(BTW...Subbing some Boston Baked Beans for the Nachos would be a much better "nose" test, IMHO.) :)

The smell goes away after a week and hours of watching TV. Too bad you can't buy the smell in a can :).

It never gets old.
I'm gonna hold you to that statement, my friend. Even when I'm an old geezer (which will be soon). :)
Ya know, kids o' corn, this baby looks so good that my VHS tapes even excel on it! (And I've done Zero calibrations yet! Save the normal turning down of Contrast & Brightness levels.)
I think it's a very good idea to watch a VHS now and again (I still have many). Doing this will whet your appetite for the "Main Event", being your next glorious DVD viewing (of, say, Saving Private Ryan or Black Hawk Down, or even Twister) at cup-rattling levels. And those previous VHS viewings will make the DVDs look all that more spectacular. :)
BTW, Tim, what do you have your TV picture settings set on?
I keep thinking I'm messing up, but it sure looks good with these numbers......
Contrast = 40.
Brightness = 40.
Color = 50.
Tint = 0.
Sharpness = 25.
I realize it's all subjective, but what are other's settings?
Thanx. :)

David,
Your Tint is "0"??? Sounds like maybe you should get AVIA afterall. :D
BTW, it's not just a subjective thing because different TVs have different characteristics and internal settings. Even different units of the same model can easily be different apart from any personal subjective preferences.

David,

Oh, I didn't realize zero is actually the mid-point, default setting for your TV. I had assumed it was the lowest setting. Hmmmm... Then is 50 for color way high on your TV??

For my Panny, I ended up settling w/ the default settings near mid-point for both color and tint for my DVD player using AVIA. I found though that I had to turn down the color setting by ~10% for my cable source via the RF coax input due to excessive red push as visible on flesh tones. I didn't have a test pattern for this, but just eyeballed it to get reasonable results for flesh tones. For my HD cable source (plus whatever cable upconversion to HD) via HD component input, I also left color and tint at default w/ only some help from an SMPTE color pattern on the recently/temporarily added cable HD channel for the NBA All-Star game stuff.
