What's new

My mom thinks it's rediculous that I want widescreen versions of movies. (1 Viewer)

Tidbit. The Richard Gere film 'Unfaithful' is only available for rent in full-screen at two Rogers near me. However, on their website, it's only available for sale in wide-screen. I guess the feel there's a difference between renters and buyers.

Plus I think that releasing home video on DVD is a little different than VHS because the directors themselves are much more involved in delivering the film and the extras. Everybody and their brother does a commentary and I'm sure the directors' desire is for the audience to see the whole image, rather than P&S.

Having said that, there are plenty of films that recieve both a widescreen and P&S release, and the director seems little concerned. Maybe they don't have much of a say so on the home video end of things, or maybe they don't want to cut their own sales.

Like I said, the widescreen market is far too large and entrenched now for them to sacrifice sales. We may get a few P&S/Open Matte transfer here and there, but if there is enough of a backlash from consumers such as us, there will also be an OAR release. Look at Willy Wonka, or in a sad case, A Midnight Clear. I guess the fan support wasn't as great for the latter as the former.
