My god, so much energy interpreting the ending.
Did people spend this much time analyzing the ending of the sitcom "Newhart?" 'Cause it's the same thing, at least in intention.
Another POTA movie, ending with our hero gazing in awe at a symbol of freedom gone wrong. That's all it is. A big 'ole rug pull.
I'm positive that's all Burton intended. I'm sure if it has caused a major fury over at alt.nerd.obsessive (comic book guy's newsgroup), he's probably having a little laugh about that too.

the horses, can't get this stupid idea out of my mind now!!! absolutely no reason for the horses to be there unless this planet was some kind of earthlike evolution before the crash of the ship. nah, crazy, major script flaw.
then ending on Earth is really flawed. shoudl have ended with Mark taking off and landing on a destructed earth or not landing, just seeing him flying away.
poor scripts in Hollywood these days......
