Hey Bob, I agree with you on that and I plan on putting the 8012 through its paces and do some critical listening before deciding to get a power amp like the Emotiva. One good reason to get it though is I can possibly do the single height channel in the middle of the room for Auro they call the voice of god. I could ether reassign an internal amp for that or I could reassign a pair of amplifiers to power a small set of speakers in another zone. Most likely I will seriously most likely use reassigned amplifiers for a second zone. If I was to use two sets of side surrounds to get a more immersive surround experience I would see if the receiver would let me assign an amplifier to a duplicate of the side surround and that is assuming that I will have extra unused amps using an external 3 channel amp.

Thank you for the article as I found it both very interesting and fascinating! There is alot in those two parts and I also want to read more into Atmos and DTS-X. But so far the way I am reading into it is that DTS-X is compatible speaker layout wise to Auro and Atmos is not compatible with Auro or DTS-X. I am glad there is about 6-7 months after I purchase my 8012 receiver till I have two pair of B&W 685 C2's in my home and hooked up and configured into the mix. It will not be till that point where I have to relocate the current surround speakers and locate them for the immersive channels.

I hope you can find something that will pay you a decent salary and get you to retirement. That must suck having all your stuff in storage and not being able to enjoy it. Hope your able to start getting your gear back into the house and hooked up again and hopefully soon. The one thing about computer work is getting your base certification doesn't get you paid very well, it is more like minimum wage to $13/hr max as most companies look at a pc like they look and feel about a toaster. It is such a common device that it is just another object and they do not want to pay decent wages untill you get to network administrator and they even will pass on people with certification just because they do not have experience. That is the problem I found after getting my A+ pc certification and those that called me passed because I did not have work experience. And part of being a network administrator is managing and keeping the email server up and running.

After reading this article I am even more sure than ever that I do not see anything else coming down the pipeline audio wise that will make me want to go beyond the Marantz SR-8012. And that is also how I feel about 4K as I just do not see how much better 8K can be at the screen sizes most people are limited to especially in apartments and condos. I see an end to the upgrade train I have been on since I got into this hobby back when I started with stereo gear. I am sure that it may all stop with 7.1.4 and maybe I might add a subwoofer and go 7.2.4 but with the Marantz 8012 and a potent 15" sub I could easily get in trouble in an apartment. I just want to get the absolute minimum finished before I move back out on my own and have my own place. It will take the stress off me knowing I already have everything I need at a minimum and that it is bought and paid for. But again thank you for the article.

I am so happy you can open the file. I was worried that you couldn't. A lot of good information in those articles. It makes me happy to help a nice person like yourself. I have about 6 occupations to go back to the Career center and discuss. All are approved for me to collect while going to school. And I don't have to look for work, just concentrate on studying, thanks to the Obama administration. Makes sense to train me to be independent not just stay on unemployment a long time with extensions. I'll get to retirement, and get my gear up and running as well. Looking at the bright side, I am now around a lot just as my granddaughter is starting to talk and count. She will be 2 years old this month.
I hope others can open the files and get a good read as well.

I was going to leave the Yamaha RX-V995 hooked up to my pc but the more I think about it I can also hook up my Denon blu-ray player to my Pioneer Elite and use the Elite to run my Polk bookshelf speakers with my pc. Anyway I have time to decide so no need to do anything on that as the Yamaha is doing a good job. It how ever doesn't have HDMI and the Pioneer Elite has HDMI and is 7.1 and also has Dolby True HD along with DTS-HD Master Audio.

I hope you find something you are interested in and that will provide a nice income.

If I take my Yamaha RX-V995 out of the loop with my pc it will get packed and stored.

I hope you like this read Dave it is about the different parameters of loudspeakers that are important and can be measured by various software, like room correction software present in today's AV receivers. They all vary in algorithm strength but they all use impulse signals to measure.

Pay attention to pg, 52 about the ear level height. And a cheap and nice feel on the feet super thick rug and pad for the floor to reduce the booom in the room below 200hz. The biggest pain in the ass to tame. But it can be done with the help of Isoacoustics platforms to reduce resonance and decouple the speakers from the floor. Combine the super thick absorbent rug and pad and research the STC factor and with the speaker stands your room will sound great at a bang for the buck level.

I can't stress enough one of the most important discoveries I made in my experiments was to destroy my entertainment furniture and get my center channel the exact same height as all my floor standers. It gave me the ability to have a 360 degree sound field that I could push the center channel forward and backward and seamlessly fit within the circle not front or back but even by boosting the db level on the center channel speaker or reducing it from my chair.

Thank you for the article and I will read it soon.

Are you going to keep the same furniture when you hook things back up or will you go with another stand for your tv to get your center channel at the desired height?

IMG_0361a.jpg

I might try and figure out a way to raise the display or maybe just build a base to raise the entire stand. I can not believe it but I am honestly thinking of replacing my Altecs with matching Bowers & Wilkins towers. Since I will most likely be moving to an apartment and space may be limited in the livingroom. I guess I could always store the Altecs in the bedroom and hook them up to my Onkyo Integra stereo intergrated amp. Over all it would help to have the same speakers all the way around but it would be hard to give up these Altecs.

I really need to start pricing getting my two posters framed especially before I move. I also should add at least 2 new 4K HDR Audio Quest HDMI cables to upgrade what I have. I will need 4 runs of speaker wire for the Bowers & Wilkins 685 C2 bookshelf speakers I will use for surrounds. Even if I relocate the equipment rack to another wall in the apartment later the Altecs and TV will need 10' with the equipment rack located on another wall. With Bowers & Wilkins towers I am looking as little as 6' including the tv stand. So it looks like it would only save me about 4' without the equipment rack. The Bowers & Wilkins 685 C2's would need about a 32" speaker stand to bring them to the height they need to be. And depending on things here and how long it takes to obtain a direct hire job instead of the agency work I might try to squeeze a new 4K player with HDR+ and Dolby Vision and a new HDR & Dolby Vision 4K display. So much to upgrade and so little money but if I push myself and save every single cent I can I will get as much done as I can. The funds for the new receiver are adding up and I hope to be at or very close to $1700 this coming Friday. I am really hoping to have $1,900 at the end of this month. After all my bills are paid I will get back to saving at the beginning of September. I am glad I have a shot at doing at least two things right now and I could have lived with what I have currently. And I know that if I have to stop at the Marantz and B&W bookshelf speakers I am golden and will be beyond happy if this is all I can do once I move out. Sure I would like to do some things but I am so lucky to have what I have especially since my wages have not been that great. I have just been very lucky at time to be able to scrimp and save and be able to have something really nice.

Keep my up to day with what you decide to get into training wise and I hope you do really well.

Thanks Dave.
I'm thinking wall mount my display high enough to put the center channel underneath on a custom shelf.
All the floor standers including center channel and sub will have Isoacoustics stands to minimize transfering vibrations to the floor, and wall with the center channel.
Have to be good to the tenants and it does help with sound.
After carefull measurement, I will make my seating proper height probably by adding something under the legs or points of contact with the floor, that way tweeters will be ear level when I'm seated.
How is the city water job news?
I'll let you know how I make out.
Thinking learning electronic repair, not for the pay but to care for my equipment when I'm retired and can't afford repairs.
Also could use that knowledge to do installation services for hire.
That would be fun getting paid to do something I enjoy.
And the satisfaction of helping people.

Well came home today to my Samsung 4K UHD TV that is over 4 years old now with volume issues out of no where. The sound on the tv works but the volume literally will not turn down! The number on the screen goes down but the physical volume stays the same. I have tired unplugging the tv, unplugging the HDMI evolution kit, I have even did a factory reset. And I still have the problem of the tv volume not going down but staying at 21. Even if the number on the screen goes down I hit volume down again and it still says 21! And the tv will not mute! I just saw a Vizio 70" 4K UHD TV for $899.99 on Best Buy's website and it has HDR and Dolby Vision. Maybe I should just ditch the $3K 4K TV that is over 4 years old and just write it off? Getting a 70" tv I would have to get a 20' HDMI cable and also run longer speaker wire and relocate the a/v rack. Just doing some what if being in a bad mood over the tv. Will not let this derail or set back my new Marantz SR-8012!

Dam then I would have to have Dish Network come out and relocate the coax to the receiver box.

Lost a few hours yesterday as I needed to go to a family funeral so hoping to get 5-6 hours of OT this Saturday to use towards the receiver. I have a thread seeing if anyone else here had this issue with a Samsung TV. Will also contact a friend who is a home theater install specialist and see if he has any other idea I can try. Not crazy about having to put this tv in the shop. So many shotty repair shops around now a days.

I wouldn't worry about it. After all a display is a display. If you are happy with the picture the volume repair is minor. A tech can come right to your house and fix it right in front of you.
My set is 8 yrs old. Minor issues with white feild uniformity. Be careful, When my father in law was in assisted living, they got bigger displays, all Vizio and they were not good. Repair will be more economical.
Google make and model and volume issue, and watch some YouTube repair videos to see if it is a piece of cake.

Have not decided and my friend is looking into his cost on a Sony 4K TV for me. Have not decided but I might just replace the Samsung and still fix the Samsung and use it as a bedroom tv if it doesn't cost much to fix it. I have some serious thinking to do about a tv which will wait till I have the Marantz SR-8012 bought and paid for. In the long run it would benafit me to get a new tv with HDR and Dolby Vision as it would allow me to take full advantage of what 4K blu-rays offer. But at this rate as long as I keep working I am going to be dead broke till the end of next summer or the end of 2019. I still need to purchase a cheap vehicle and save first and last month rent. I am seriously thinking about a 70" display so to early to worry about it since I still need around $760 till I get me 8012 which I am stoked about!

I hate that I am having the issue with my Samsung and it really pissed me off that the jerk that is staying here destroyed my cat6 cable and if I try to pressure him to replace it he will have a melt down. So I have to eat the $40 to get another cable long enough to go from the router to the a/v rack.

Marantz SR-8012 Surround Receiver
?? New 4K TV ??
Bowers & Wilkins 685 C2 Bookshelf Speakers (2 Pair)
Speaker Stands
?? New updated 4K Blu-ray player

Then I can move the Samsung 4K blu-ray and the Pioneer Elite with my pc and hook them up to my LG 43" 4K display. I have come to the realization that I do not believe my 4K projector dream is feisable as I do not see myself being able to afford a house and I do not see myself having a room deep enough to have a projector with a large screen. So for the foreseeable future I need to switch gears and change my home theater plans to the video revolving around a flat panel display.

Just please don't go to Vizio because of price, the performance is way poor. I know you have watched a lot of movies and you would not be satisfied with the picture. Please trust me on this one thing. NO VIZIO!!!!!!!!! I am more of an audiophile but I can still see and the old saying be careful what you wish for, well when I got into video with A Video Standard on laser disc from non other than Joe Kane, the number one person on display parameters I have noticed every problem with my consumer grade display. Yes the information gives me the ability to get my display as good as it can be but. the education also points out any shortcomings. I have learned to run my display in a linear mode, NO CLIPPING. that way I am not stressing out the power supply and I am not missing any information in the signal. Spears and Munsil have clipping test patterns to set up your display. Has to be one of the best signals ever on a test disc..

The one thing I do think about is that my current display can not take advantage of HDR and Dolby Vision content. I am waiting to see if my friend can get me a deal on a Sony if it has the HDR & Dolby Vision. Then I can weight my options which includes repairing the Samsung. The one thing I continue to be jazzed about is the Marantz receiver and I want to listen to my SACD of Pink Floyd Dark Side Of The Moon and Norah Jones also including the SACD of BB King Kinda Blue. I still have the goal of upgrading my Advent Marbles to Bowers & Wilkins 685 C2 bookshelf speakers to match my B&W center channel. Things are moving quickly recently and at the beginning of the year I never would have thought I would be looking at a flagship Marantz surround receiver. I need to find a file I have with all the video settings for my tv so I can reset it after doing a factory reset that did not fix the issue. Will still be looking into the issue to see if I can still take care of it without a service call.

I will take your advice. I keep hearing about the TCL display but I am not going to spend my money on a Chinese brand tv especially since made in China is not that great. At least the 8012 Marantz is made in Japan. The Sony has HDR but I do not see anything about Dolby Vision. If I get a new tv I think I will stick with Sony, Samsung and LG. A OLED seems like the best way to go but may just be out of my price range. And a LED 4K may be good enough for me and it will have a brighter picture.

Dave, the Sony A1E, A8F and X900F models all do Dolby Vision and HDR. The 850F and down will not do it. Samsung does not do DV on any of their TVs. I currently run the Sony XBR65A8F and Marantz SR7010 with 5 B&W speakers around me and 4 Klipsh ceiling speakers.I could not be happier with the setup. The OLED is an amazing TV and the Marantz is the best receiver I've had. You should be extremely pleased with the new receiver.

For the TV, I would look at the 900F for the best motion I've seen on a LED TV or I would look at an OLED for the superior black levels. Only you can decide which will be better for you in your specific room.

Can't wait for you to get the Marantz, I look forward to your thoughts on it.

Thank you for the DV information as I really do appreciate it. I bet your 7010 and those B&W's sound very good! OLED's have the best black level but the prices are still a bit high. LED's have the brighter pictures so it is a balancing act choosing which one and like you said look for the one that will work best in my situation. As far as the 8012 goes I actually want to try and write a review on it. Later on I want to get B&W 685 C2 bookshelf speakers for my surround channels. I will also be hooking up my Denon DVD-2200 DVD/CD/DVD-A/SACD player to the Marantz via 5.1 anolog rca's. I am going to check into a Sony OLED and see if I can get a good price on it.

Currently looking into Sony OLED but still researching possible fix for volume issue with my Samsung 4K UHD TV. Also LED 4K displays are not off the table!

Also researching a 75" LG LED 4K TV
