I work in a 24/7-365 office monitoring central office switches for Ma Bell. We have holiday coverage for all shifts but its run with a volunteer skeleton crew (at 2.5X pay). If things get too busy they can always call out extra help but I can't remember that ever happening. Its too bad that your management team can't cut down on the number of techs for holiday coverage. The call volume can't possibly be as high as a normal day and they'd save on the double time pay.
Sounds like you work for COnvergy's doing COmcast tech support. I knew that curse a few years back when I took a semister off college and decided to work. Pay was adaquate for what I was doing, but they restricted EVERYTHING>
Some of these people on the phone dont know what they are talking about from 9 to 5 on regular business days. No need to have them working Holidays too.
And what kind of knucklebrain is concerned with getting their cable fixed on Christmas? Geeze. Cant they wait an extra day? If they cant, too bad. Rent a movie or read a book. Hollywood Video is like the only place open Christmas (How lame? Cant you rent the movie the day before? You have 5 days to return. Sheesh). Everything else is really dead with no one in sight. But, those big bright Casino like Videostore lights are flashing.
The wind whistling, the dark dreary weather, no people out. It's really kind of creepy after 3 or 4. Glad I am at a party.
I could see major things like The Hospital. I mean sure, people would like to close for Christmas at the hospital, but it wouldnt work out to well I dont think. Some of these people just wont take waiting till the 26th to get injured as an answer.
Plus you need extras on shift for all the extra injuries due to family christmas fights, flying turkeys, and fires.
Actually my mom has offered to help pay for me going back to school and getting a degree. I'm going to apply someplace for the spring term and see what happens from there. It may mean moving but as far as I'm concerned I don't have a family or love interest at the moment to tie me down so I'm going for it. I plan to be out by summer. Once I know then I'll get some job where I am or do freelance computer repair if I have to.
I did sit down with my manager and told her what a mistake I thought this was, that it was unfair to spring it on us like this, that it was a poor management decision (not that it was hers to make, she's just the messenger), and that it really tells us that management doesn't give a shit about our needs and that will be reflected in office morale and productivity. She got rather upset at that but I don't care. I'm doing what I think is right.
Historically we've always had a skeleton crew on for the holidays and even that was overkill as most people assume we're closed. Don't know why they've changed it.
I do work for a major cable TV provider doing tech support for their high speed internet service.
And as for suddenly quitting, that's not professional. They'll get two weeks notice when I know for sure. They may have no class but I do.
Really ? Well, I sure hope I am not the one needing your skills while your pissing away the day grilling hot dogs.
Seriously, if you were the difference between life and death, you wouldnt be on a holiday. I am sure someone or something fills in for you, or more to the point, there is a plan in effect to allow you to take holidays off.
