Well I took the plunge and bought a laser disc player, mainly for Star Wars (original theater version), and Song of the South. Are there other laser discs that I should purchase that won't be seen on DVD?

I bought a LD player last year simply for the Star Wars and Indiana Jones trilogies. Of course, then I bought Schindlers List and a whole mess of other LD's.

NICE choice, John! - and I don't mean that in an Eddie Haskell kind of way.

I fired up the ole' LD player the other day for a Spielbergfest: the Indy trilogy, Schindler's List, and my sweet-sounding Saving Private Ryan LD.

Besides the required Indy and SW LDs, some of the must-haves are the music LDs that haven't made it onto DVD yet.

- 10,000 Maniacs MTV Unplugged

- The Cure "Show"

- The Cure "In Orange"

- Kiss Unplugged (available on DVD but almost impossible to find)

I also find the Criterion LDs as "must-haves", especially Baron Munchausen and Blade Runner.

At one time there was a VERY comprehensive thread on this subject... I had it bookmarked and referred to it quite a lot.

Is there any chance one of the Admins could find that thing? It's a wonderful resource, thought I'm sure it needs to be updated. I've done a search for it and couldn't turn it up.

Jaws (CAV. Complete documentary)

Dr. No (Criterion CAV)

From Russia With Love (Criterion CAV)

Goldfinger (Criterion CAV)

Star Wars Trilogy

My Fair Lady (Boxed Set)

Show Boat (Criterion CAV)

Ultimate Oz Boxed Set

Close Encounters Of The Third Kind (Criterion CAV)

1776 (Restored edition. Soon to be hacked up on DVD)

The Private Life Of Sherlock Holmes

It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World

Then there are the Japanese import boxed sets of the Irwin Allen TV series like "Lost In Space" and "Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea" that I believe will not be appearing on DVD anytime soon.

On top of Beatles Anthology and the Star Wars and Indy discs, I'd suggest the Criterion CAV set of Se7en, particularly for the different look of its transfer (also approved by Fincher), which I really like. Also, Criterion's Blade Runner is the only way to see the theatrical cut (though it is the dozen-seconds-longer Euro cut with the extra violence).
And anything music-related that doesn't have a PCM track on DVD. ;)
And all those kick ass Errol Flynn movies! The Sea Hawk, baby!
Plus, on many LDs you can find a groovy turtle lying on his back on side 4!

You look down and you see a tortoise, Aaron...it's crawling toward you. You reach down and you flip the tortoise over on its back, Aaron. The tortoise lays on its back, its belly baking in the hot sun beating its legs, trying to turn over, but it can't. Not without your help. But you're not helping. Why is that Aaron?

Please don't shoot me.
