I just read on CNN that musician Ray Charles has passed away. Information is pretty limited right now, but I'm very very saddened to hear this news.

Ray was an inspiration to many, and despite the difference in generations I always got a major kick out of his music. Just 3 weeks ago I brought Blues Brothers to my parents' house to watch on their HT, and my usually out-of-the-loop parents knew who he was right away. That alone to me was an indication of his popularity, and of how far his reach extended throughout the various generations.

Rest In Peace Ray. You'll be missed.

    Moe.

Ray is an important part of my music collection, including Modern Sounds in Country Music and a treasured LD of Ray & Willie sitting next to each other at a piano and having a ball preparing for an Austin City Limits taping.

That sucks- he used to do ads for Pioneer Laserdisc players- "If it don't sound good, who cares what the picture looks like?"

I was never a huge fan of his particular music but his influence and importance can't be denied, he'll be missed.

CNN has reported that he passed away as a result of liver disease. It's not on the current news announcement yet, as details are still coming in at this time.

Of course, he did the Pepsi spots about 10-15 years ago, the ones with the slogan, "You got the right one, baby, uh-huh".

Man, such a bummer week this has been, first with the passing of Ronald Reagan on Saturday, and now Ray Charles today. [IMG]

    His music will live on.

I really don't understand this comment. Ray just didn't sing R&B. He produced two of the greatest country music albums ever made and sang popular standards by great American composers as well. He was one of a kind and will be sorely missed. He was recently signed by Concord Records and was preparing a duet album with various singers. Hopefully it was finished.

Had the good fortune to see Ray perform a few years back... saw him play with our cities philharmonic orchestra. He was something else!

    RIP Ray! [IMG]

I thought it was pretty clear...I don't particularly like his music. I think he was influential and important. He will be missed.

I almost got to see him live once; he was performing "America The Beautiful" at Red Sox opening day last year. I had a ticket, but it was raining and only one gate was open so half of us got in late, only to discover a rain delay. It wasn't until the next day that I learned that the "festivities" had been done early. Son of a...

One of the most amazing uses of his music in movies is in the recent anime Metropolis, where director Rintaro inserts "I Can't Stop Loving You" in an unusual - but utterly perfect - spot. Just amazed me that this Japanese animation descended upon a German Expressionist film would use a Ray Charles country song (from "New Sounds in Country Music") at its climax and it would be so ideal.

I always thought that Ray Charles' rendition of 'America The Beautiful' should me made the U.S. national anthem.

I think I'll watch the Blues Brothers and drink a Pepsi tonight.

We've lost yet another legend [IMG]
