Music Direct is taking pre-orders for the Peter Gabriel Up SACD. They claim it is expected to be available in late December, and their price is $17.99. Here's the link:

Hopefully this is a sign of things to come, meaning the release of Peter Gabriel's catalog on SACD (and DVD-Audio).

And if you can't wait, they have a two LP pressing by Classic Records (the best vinyl folks around) for the same album. 200 gram Quiex vinyl - heavy fuel as Mark Knopfler would say...
Let's hope that "So" is put out in Super Audio as well.

Any word if this is going to be a Hybrid disc? Seeing that I have yet to buy a SACD player (hoping Sony puts out something new for next year), and I do well over 50% of my listening in the car, I am sticking to only Hybrids at this time.

Justin, I am guessing it will be a hybrid disc. Universal has released or will be releasing some single-layer discs, but aside from Sony, single-layer discs still are the exception and not the rule.

According to the universal web site, www.umusic.com/newformats the Peter Gabriel SACD will by Stereo/MCH Single Layer.
In fact the majority of the popular Univeral SACDs are going to be Single Layer - the hybrids all seem to be more Classical oriented releases.

mmmm this is a tough one. I have the cd which uses the latest technology, would the sacd be that much an improvement?
I actually would prefer a dvda for this one due to the fact it is a (sort of) hard rock title ( heavy use of bass and precussion).
I find sacd does acoustic mellow stuff better.

John, it's obviously hard to say. A common argument is that PCM masters don't benefit from SACD treatment. I disagree, if for no other reason, because the mastering to CD may not have been optimal. In any event, if you like Up, it would probably be worth giving the SACD a try.

I wonder if Up will come to DVD-Audio at some point. It has been said that Peter Gabriel's catalog will be released on SACD and DVD-Audio. Perhaps Up will get dual high-resolution treatment. Does anyone know one way or the other?

Wow. It's hard for me to imagine any more clarity than the already-superb Up standard CD.

The last thing I remember reading on the dvd-a release is that it would be second quarter of 2003. It'll be interesting to see if it actually appears.

In the meantime, can anyone comment on the quaity of "Up". I had planned on ordering this on sacd since it's mutichannel, but I've read a couple of reviews on the cd that basically said this was not one of Gabriel's better works when compared to his earlier stuff. I'm not a major fan but I do like some of his stuff. Any comments?

    Michael,

Thanks for the information. It is interesting that Gabriel's works are distributed by different major labels in the US and Europe. I am intrigued to see how Up is released on the high-resolution formats.

    Micahel,

I don't have the Up CD (not a huge Gabriel fan), but I too have read mixed reviews of this album. Do a search on this site, as there was a thread running with reviews shortly after Up came out.

His new cd has no "hits" like his previous albums such as "So" or "Us".
It's a very moody dark version of Peter Gabriel. It sounds like he was holed up in a studio for 10 years.

If you like the dark PG like the "Security" cd, you may like this one.

I'm a big PG fan (I will see him soon in NY at MSG) and I know this cd will grow on me but I wouldn't recommend it to a casual fan.

I disagree. I think that the very things that make Up so different from So and Us make it a must-buy. You are getting the REAL Peter Gabriel, the important, innovative, avant-garde creative thinker from the golden age of progressive rock. Up is a magnificent album in every way. It took no growing on me, I was hooked from the first measure.

If the new PG sacd is only a 2 channel release, I will pass on that one. The brand new modern mastered CD is fine.

If and when they do Up in Multi-Channel, then I'll pick up the sacd/dvda.
