Murder, She Wrote - Universal Studios announces retail release of classic Angela Lansbury series

Around a month ago we let you know that a direct-sale version of Murder, She Wrote - The Complete First Season was already available, but that in March we would see an in-store release of the box set. Today the studio has announced that the exact date of that release is March 29th.

18 hours and 34 minutes of Angela Lansbury as mystery writer/mystery solver Jessica Fletcher will be on 3 double-sided "DVD-18" discs in a set that lists for $49.98. Full-frame video, just as originally seen, is accompanied by English Mono sound, French and Spanish subtitles, and closed captioning. Here's the studio's write-up of the release:

A new chapter begins as Season One of TV's most popular and widely acclaimed detective series, Murder, She Wrote, comes home to DVD for the first time Ever! Angela Lansbury stars in the role that earned her 12 consecutive Emmy nominations as everyone's favorite super-sleuth, Jessica Fletcher, a famous mystery writer who has a knack for solving murders on and off the page. Along with the quirky residents of Cabot Cove, Maine, Jessica is joined in her deliciously suspicious tales of mystery and mayhem by some of the most celebrated guest stars of screen and stage, including Jerry Orbach, Leslie Nielsen, Joaquin Phoenix, Andy Garcia, Martin Landau, Milton Berle, Peter Graves, Vicki Lawrence and many more. Investigate all 21 Season One episodes and the suspenseful original pilot movie, The Murder of Sherlock Holmes, of the illustrious and thrilling series that will have you guessing "whodunit" until the very end.

The retail version of the cover art isn't available from the studio yet, but the word is that it will be exactly like the Time/Life version of the art except that it will be a darker brown instead of the white/tan look of the direct-sale box. Stay tuned and we'll let you know anything further we find out, just as soon as the studio releases the info.

Thanks, Dave for the info! I also found this photo on an eBay auction:

That's the retail box, all right. Weird...I wonder how the hell that eBayer got THAT box? The other current non-bootleg listing at eBay is the white/tan Time-Life box.

Sometimes this industry just cracks me up the way things show up months before they're supposed to!

Andrew, I picked up a copy for my wife from the local Loblaws superstore, they have great deals on DVD's and carry just about every TV/DVD title that I collect. I paid $39.83cdn. A good price I think!!

Lanie, I saw this on your other "Murder She Wrote" post. Was curious since I have this DVD pack. I loved watching the S1 Columbo pack. Just curious about what you had heard about it.

Back on topic: I've been "on the fence" about getting the Murder She Wrote pack. I know it's a 1st-class series but I just can't decide yet. I had it on a pre-order at Amazon and removed it at the last minute. I didn't watch much of this series during it's original airing. Oh well, since April's looking like a relatively slow (for me) release month for TV/DVD's, I think I'll go ahead and get this one :)

Does anyone think sales will warrent season 2+ on DVD? It was 31 yesterday on Amazon, which isn't bad.

I think you should get this set, Jeff! I'm enjoying it!

Sold :D I just got "knocked off the fence" by "Andy". Thanks :)

Ordered it today at Amazon. May not have the best price but the Cust. Svc is :emoji_thumbsup: :emoji_thumbsup:

I just received an e-mail from Amazon about another pre-order that I placed last week (Combat! S3 both sets and Twilight Zone Def Version S2) release date 03/29). The order was delayed which is unusual for Amazon since I get a lot of TV/DVD's from them and this is the 1st time that I haven't received a pre-order within 2-3 days after the release date. They are switching my order with no charge to 2-3 day delivery (I always pick the free 5-7 day delivery) and they're shipping items on this order as they get them from their supplier and not holding all items for one (later date) shipment. All for no charge. I was impressed to say the least. They get all of my TV/DVD business after this :)
