Hello Everybody
did you know the Australian R4 Version of Mummy Returns has a DTS Soundtrack.
I just brought the R1 Mummy Returns and it only has Dolby Digital. I guess Universal has ripped me off again!
I guess that I will have to wait for the Ultimate Edition from Universal to inlcude DTS. But Universal will not suck me in again to buy the same movie twice.
Whats the deal? Do you feel ripped off as well.
PS: This my first post and i look forward to participating in your Great Forum!.
I live in Australia, but only buy Region 1 DVD's from the US. I have over 320 DVD's and over 600 LAserdiscs.

Do I feel ripped off?
Nope.
The DD track on this disc literally rocks the house! Give it a chance.
I must warn you, members of this forum are very touchy about this subject, I don't think you know what you've stepped into with this thread, get ready for a little flaming, but your new so they might cut you some slack. :)
And welcome to the forum!

Yeah I feel ripped off!
After all I paid the monster amount of 17.99 and all I got was a DVD with a great picture, a kick ass 5.1 track and a hearty helping of extras!
Those bastards....

I don't feel ripped off. I'm waiting for the UE

Studios don't force me to buy a movie and I don't buy films that aren't region 1.

Karl,
You feel "ripped off" becuase the R1 DVD doesn't have a DTS track?
Well...thank god those bastards at UNIVERSAL at least decided to include a crummy Dolby 5.1 track which usually sucks.

I mean, the 5.1 track was only fantastic, I expect deafening sound...UN ACCEPTABLE!
I want a DTS track so that my ears bleed.
YOU GOT THAT UNIVERSAL!
(yes, I'm being sarcastic)

Let me re-iterate my point.
I am aanoyed that Mummy Returns does not have a DTS Soundtrack.
Am I supposed to be happy that the DD5.1 Soundtrack is so good, so that should make up for what I didnt get. No.
i am sure that given the choice most people would prefer DTS to DD5.1, so if there is a DTS Soundtrack available, why couldnt universal just put it on the DVD. Unless of course they are saving it for their Ultimate Edition.
of course I brought the DVD and it was my decision.
Hey what about a POLL "Who would prefer to have DTS as well on their Mummy Returns". Knowing that Universal is willing to provide this FREE to customers in R4.

I don't feel ripped off since the DD track kicks ass. However, I'm a little disappointed that R4 included a DTS track , and R1 does not. Everyone seems to think that an UE will come out next year (to promote the release of "The Scorpion King" in May) with a DTS track, and I think so as well. If a DTS version indeed is released (I hope) I will buy it, but for now I'll enjoy the "kick ass" 5.1 surround experience that Dolby provides on this disc. L

Karl, most people would prefer a soundtrack that delivers the goods, and this is it, if the DD track was lacking in quality in some way than I could understand your frustration, but if the soundtrack delivers on all counts, than go for it DD or not. I mean you probably will get your wish when the 'UE' is released, but until then, their is absolutly nothing wrong with the DD track on the current edition.
At the risk of getting flamed myself, i'll go so far as to say that after hearing this track, I can't imagine DTS improving it all that much, certaintly not enough to warrent being upset by the current track. If it sounded like shit, I could understand, but it doesn't, it's reference Dolby Digital 5.1.

...
I'm sure that given the choice, most people wouldn't know the difference.
I'm also sure that in a blind test with identical mastering, most people couldn't hear a difference either.

I have the R4 version, and trust me, you're not missing that much. The difference between the DTS and (384kbps on the R4 version) Dolby Digital soundtrack are minimal.

This issue should be forgotten all together.
The soundtracks that DD and DTS are offering for
home theatre is truly amazing. we are really reaping
the benefits of their technologies. What is considered reference is beyond anything I have heard, home or at the movies, I love them both. And when done right I really don't mind one over the other.
I will continue to support both formats, because they support us the consumers. Play the The Mummy in DTS
and then play The Mummy Returns in DD and here the wonders
of the two

Well that's interesting. I'd say you are being ripped off any time there is a regional difference with a disc but who knows.
Considering the number of times R1 gets DTS and the rest of the world doesn't you have wonder how this has occurred.

Most people that can't notice the difference between DD and DTS are the Walmart shoppers that can't handle black bars on the 20" mono tv's.. hehe
That's the reason why I didn't purchase Mummy's Return is b/c I know Universal will have the Ultimate Edition w/DTS when they "Scorpion King' comes out.

You all are right to an extent. Ripped off is a strong term, but it does seem like the DTS was deliberately held off the Region 1. If I'm not mistaken, the Region 4 version was stretched to 2 discs to accomodate DTS, whereas the Region 1 is a single disc. Why wasn't the Region 1 disc treated in the same manner?

Dan

Mathias,
"Stephen Sommers said it himself. There will be no UE of The Mummy Returns. This is the ultimate disc."
Ahahahahahah! That's a funny one!
Since when does a director have ANY sayso in what, how and when a studio releases its titles?
The Mummy & The Mummy Returns are not owned by the director, but by Universal Studios. If universal Studios decides to remix the films into musical porno, then that's what they'll do... regardless of what Sommers has to say about it.
Sommers may request that his name be removed from the credits, but that's about it.
If Universal wants to release an Ultimate Edition in six months, then Universal will release an Ultimate Edition in six months.
Moe.
