One thing that is clear to me is that most of the HTF views these criteria differently than I do. I actually agree with the final votes, but if you threw the final films all in together, my votes would be The Godfather for everything except Schindler's List for serious. As a matter of fact, Schindler's List was my choice for most serious from the beginning (obviously The Apartment was my choice for the other 3 criteria).

Anyway thanks for playing, and I'm thinking of doing another one with a different set of criteria. Look for it soon, if you're interested.

Well actually I'd state it stronger than that.
Of all films ever made, I think The Apartment is the best art. Really.
I thought my opinion was well known about that (if not shared by anyone else :)).

But there's nothing especially artistic about it. I know it's your favorite and you think it's the best, but how is it more artistic than, say, 2001 or Citizen Kane or Vertigo?

As I said in the first post for me there is no difference between the criteria of rather watch, best film and best art.

I disagree with you about The Apartment. I think it is great art.

I remember once saying that about the Beatles (quite a while ago) and being told the same thing, that it wasn't art like jazz or classical. I disagreed then and do now.

Of course, you and I have different definitions of what makes something art.

Your examples are interesting. 2001, Citizen Kane and Vertigo.

All of these are more serious than The Apartment, and 'moodier' for lack of a better term, but I don't consider them better art.

Can you give me an example of a comedy that is art? Better yet, one that isn't a dark comedy? The reason I ask is that I get a feeling that if you don't think The Apartment is great art, then you think that because it's a comedy.

Is The Princess Bride artistic? Monty Python & the Holy Grail? Sullivan's Travels? Duck Soup? A Hard Day's Night?
