I just got Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection: Volume 2 in the mail the other day. I must say, it's a great set for any MST3K fan. Pod People is hilarious.(McCLOUD!) Back to my question: Anybody know if volumes 1 and 3 are any good?

I have volume 3. While it isn't as good as volume 2 (nothing of Pod People quality here), it is pretty decent.

I'll disagree. Personally, I thought Vol. 3 was better. I've always loved The Unearthly (probably because it was the first MST I ever saw), Sidehackers was pretty good, and the Shorts Vol. 2 was definitely funnier than Vol. 1 IMO. Pod People was definitely the highlight of Vol. 2.

Haven't seen Volume 1-not as fond of the Mike stuff. Just got done watching the single disk release of I Accuse My Parents-hilarious! Too bad it was one of Joel's last.

Yes, shorts volume 2 is one of the best releases. Also, Sidehackers is one of the worst movies they ever showed. Get it.

Collection 2 contains two MST3k classic films:

Cave Dwellers is astoundingly bad and bad in the way only MST3k can make it excellent. This episode is legend and considered one of the best.

Pod People is another classic episode and even worse than Cave Dwellers. Another one considered among the best.

In the shorts section is probably the best short they ever did, The Home Economics Story. This is Peabody and Ace material. I laugh out loud just thinking about some of the lines in this. Pure gold.

All the sets are "must owns" for me. I have #1 and #3. I have not yet picked up #2 because I have all those episodes on VHS... but I will pick it up soon. SKYDIVERS is solid stuff.

Can't believe nobody has mentioned Angels Revenge
with Jack Palance, Jim Backus and Alan Hale Jr.

Really embarrassing moment for Jim Backus.

I find The Atomic Brain fantastically horrible (and hillarious). It is on volume 3.

Personally, I prefer Mike to Joel, but having them both in one episode makes Soul Taker a must! (It isn't out from Rhino, yet, but per Best Brains, Inc's okay to "keep trading the [episodes]," I got a very good copy, (near Rhino caliber), on DVD from a MYSTie trader.)

    Peace,

    Mark

    Ah, yes. Soul Taker.
Makes you wonder if the writer of Final Destination saw this movie[IMG]

Mark Walker, could you share the name/URL of the MiSTie trader? I recently traded for a dvdr of "Kitten with a Whip" and was less than pleased by what passed for "B" quality video...

More on topic, Collection 2 is a must have for any fan. Personally, I think Shorts Vol. 1 is the best; just offer to play "A Date With Your Family" for your parents or anyone who grew up in the fifties.

    Tobias-

Even though Best Brains, Inc. has given their endorsement to sharing and trading episodes between fans,
I don't know how comfortable I am just listing the URL
of the guy who has sent me so many episodes that do
stand up well, quality wise, when compared to the
other episodes that have been released by Rhino, because
the admin here, understandibly, might think we are
too close to discussing bootlegs, which, for Rhino released
episodes would be true...even though the MSTie trader does
NOT/will not offer any episodes avaialble from Rhino, or
in the case of the film, where Universal holds copyright.

Shoot me off an e-mail to [email protected]
and I'll send you any information.
(And, no, I don't get anything for directing people
    to this guy.)

    Regards,

    Mark

Mark, I understand the cautionary note. That's why I made the distinction of "trading". I think Best Brains' policy of "keep circulating the tapes" is well enough known, and easily verifiable, that the mods would have little cause for concern. Nevertheless, I'll drop the discussion here.

If the admin post a "thumbs up," in this thread to my posting the URL, I'll do it immediately thereafter.

Volume 2 is probably the best, and Volume 3 after that. There's a lot of shorts in Volume 3, besides just the Shorts Volume 2 disc.

    Tobias-

Since no admin have said a peep, I'll go ahead in here
and include the URL of this guy:
    http://www.castleforrester.com/

Again, as I have stated in the e-mails I have replied
    to several of you, I get no compensation from this guy;
I have just been the most pleased with his MST3K DVDs
    of any MSTie trader.

The ones marked "transfer: "digital" as source
    really are fantastic,
and I trade them all with
him without hesitation. He also has episodes marked
"transfer: VHS," which are good, but do show their
    VHS roots...

Just as a note the admin...again, posting this guy's URL
for fan-made DVDs of MST3K DVDs is not in violation, as
I understand it, of the forum's rules, since he is not
selling "bootlegs," and only trades episodes not available
from any studio sources, with the full support of
Best Brains, Inc.'s mantra, "keep trading [the episodes]."

    Peace,

    Mark

Mark, thanks for the URL. BTW, I wasn't waiting for you to post publicly, I just forgot to email.

On the box sets from Rhino, are these really the best episodes, or are these just the best ones that Rhino could get the rights to?

Any chance we'll get the magic sword? I'm not sure what the rights situation is, but it's one of my favorites.

I would say that your hardest or most impossible stuff is
Godzilla's, Gamera's and Santa Claus Conquers the Martians (1964)
To bad too, because I love the episode of Gamera Vs. Guiron

I heard that they are shooting for new Sci-fi episodes(season 9 & 10) next on DVD

The only problem is, with the newer seasons they started to get into story lines, instead of the invention exchange.
so, if they skip episodes, stuff will be happening, and things might get spoiled for new watchers
