CHINA NEXT TO GET ACCESS TO MICROSOFT SOURCE CODE

    Posted February 28, 2003 06:15 Pacific Time

China has signed up for Microsoft's new Government Security
Program (GSP), giving the Chinese government access to the
source code of Microsoft's Windows operating system software,
    Microsoft said Friday.

The agreement was signed by Microsoft and the China
Information Technology Security Certification Center. Chinese
President JiangZemin was briefed on the GSP on Friday by
Microsoft Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates,
who is visiting China, Microsoft said in a statement.

Well, MS seems to be telling the Chinese Government one thing, and the US Government another:

What MS really wants is access to a half a billion customers who are currently looking at Linux and Open Source products due to security issues.

This goes for the Governments of many countries (including the US DoD) who believe that using 'secret' source code for Government purposes or code paid for by the people (taxpayers) is not in the best interests of security.
