    Hi,

MPI has put a tiny blurb in their future release section announcing the upcoming release of the volume (4 DVD box set) of the recently UCLA-restored Basil Rathbone films. The link can be found here. (You need to scroll to the bottom of the page to the "coming soon" section.)

It is my understanding that the 12 Universals will be released prior to the 2 Foxes, because the Foxes weren't restored and MPI doesn't want anythig judging future releases based on the Foxes.

I'd be curious to hear what others think of the pricing ($70 MSRP for 4 films). I think it's rather steep although I realize significant discounts can be obtained on-line.

Thanks for the info. $70 is high, especially if there are no special features but I'll be picking them up anyway.

    Hi,

Cover art for the first box set plus some of the individual boxes has been made available via the Scarlet Street website. Original poster art was not used because the PD releases have already used this tactic and MPI wants to distance themselves from those inferior packages.

    Here are some samples:

So - where is the Rathbone Hound of the Baskersville in the scheme of things? That's the one I really want.

    Alan

MPI mentioned that both The Hound of the Baskervilles & The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes will be released at a later time (I think beacuse of further restoration).

Extrapolation, then, would seem to indicate that Collection #3 will be released around Christmas (what with Vol. 1 on October 28th and Vol. 2 November 25th).

Some kind of "TRIPLE PACK HOLMES COLLECTION" might be a nice Christmas idea. [IMG]

    Thanks Paul. [IMG]

BTW, what's your favorite Basil S.H. film?

Mine would be (although I enjoy all 14) ......

    1.) Hound
    2.) House Of Fear
    3.) Scarlet Claw
    4.) Faces Death
    5.) Woman In Green

    -------------------------

"It's beyond imagination I suppose, Lestrade, that someone else could have used the rake and then wiped off both sets of fingerprints?!" -- Classic S.H. deductive reasoning in "Sherlock Holmes Faces Death"

    David,

My favorite film is "Terror By Night". Following that would be "Pearl of Death", "Scarlet Claw", and "House of Fear".

For whatever reason "Pursuit to Algiers" never gets watched all that much even though it's still a good movie.

I agree that they're all good. The decision to pull the plug on the series when they did was a good one because it kept the series from degrading like the Monogram Chans did.

I forgot to mention it before, but other extras that have been requested of MPI (no guarantee that this'll ever happen though) include the Rathbone/Bruce cameo in the movie "Crazy House" and the inclusion of the movie "The Spider Woman Strikes Back" with Gale Songergaard and Rondo Hatton. Although I've never seen it, I've been told that it's not an actual sequel since Gale plays a different character.

Hatton played "Creeper" like roles in several other films. Apparently he was a very nice gentleman in real life who was cursed by a disfiguring disease.
