    Folks,
Looking for some good free software that converts CD tracks to mp3s. Using WinAmp is rather awkward.
    Thanks.

MusicMatch is still the best. You only have to pay if you want faster CD ripping and burning.

I'm a big fan of CDex: it's freeware and works great.

Thanks, guys! It turns out my roommate already has Music Match (I don't know if it's the full or basic version), and I'll be using his computer for burning discs anyway, so I'll try that out. I played around with it a little and it seems pretty cool.
I hope to buy an mp3 player for my car today. [IMG]

AudioCatalyst is also very good - access to CDDB, 320Kb conversion, normalizing...very cool.

they discuss something called 'LAME' - not exactly sure what it is but it sounds kind of important. [IMG]

LAME is the actual protocol for encoding, called a codec. LAME is included with CDex, along with several other not-as-good codecs.

I'm messing around with Musicmatch and I'm having one problem: when I burn mp3s, it puts the songs on the CD in alphabetical order. Does anyone know how to get it to record in album song-list order? (besides renaming all the filenames with numbers, which would be painfully tedious)

I'm using CD'n'Go as a ripper. I convert all my CDs to Ogg Vorbis using it. Go to www.vorbis.com in the download section, you should find a link to it. It comes with a utility called "Burn'n'go" which is to burn MP3/WAV/WMA/OGG files to audio tracks.
    It's free.
