I know that MP3s can be stored on xbox's hard drive for playback during select games. But can it be used as a stand-alone MP3 player? Can the DVD remote be used to switch between songs?

Also, does the RF connector have RCA outputs for audio as well?

Actually I'd bet that it probally uses wma's as opposed to mp3's.

Yes you can rip CD's and play them back outside of a game. It will even do a little visualization. Although IMHO the visualization isn't that exicting.

The DVD remote works as expected with the rip'd CD's or with actual CDs.

I don't actually have the RF connector. But I've seen the other 3 connectors, and all of them feature stereo audio outs, with the two high-end items having digital out as well.

    [Edited to fix typo.]

You can make the visualization go fullscreen too...ummmm I think you hit Y and then X or something like that while it is playing a CD to force it fullscreen.

So the only way to get music onto an xbox is to rip audio CDs, and not MP3-encoded CDs?

X-Box will not read most cd-r discs but it will read cd-rw. I have rewritten music to disc several times and have had no problem playing them on my X-Box.

I tried a disc with MP3 files and the XBox kicked it out.

If you need to use CDRs (audio, not MP3), try 'Princo' brand media.
