Based on your recommendations I downloaded and
installed Mozilla Firebird in hopes of replacing
Microsoft Internet Explorer.

So far, well, it seems okay. The thing is, it doesn't
come loaded with bells and whistles. It seems all the
extra "extensions" you need have to be downloaded from
the Mozilla Home page.

Perhaps you guys have some suggestions on what to
install and how to get the best out of this program.

The FIRST problem I have is a lack of a FLASH player.
I can't even display the flash banner on the HTF home
page. Perhaps you guys can start with directing me to
the right file.

Any other suggestions, tips, etc. would be appreciated.

Update....

Found the FLASH plug-in, but it wasn't thru
Mozilla's site.

How do I do tabbed browsing?

Any other really good plug-ins that you recommend?

For a long list of extensions go here.

I like the Google toolbar for firebird. Also, having options in the context menu like "Open link target in IE" and "Search Dictonairy/Amazon/IMDb.com" with highlighted text is helpful. Flash block and Adblock are two other great extensions.

For tabbed browsing I usually just use the middle-click button on the mouse or right-click.

Getting plug-ins to work isn't always easy...this page helps.

And when all else fails, I use the forums.

Hope this helps.

I think the tab browsing is already installed on it. Just right click on a link and it's in the menu that pops up. And if you want to open a new tab hit Ctrl T. To get the flash player to work, you just have to tell it to recognize Firebird.

I just got Firebird myself, and am liking it. I've taken explorer off my desktop for the time being to give Firebird a fair chance.

What will the newer 0.8 edition have differently?

It is, but it is not as good as it could be. The Tab Browser Extension (TBE) makes it alot more functional.

This site
here has some good tips and tweaks for Firebird.

Firefox 0.8 (no longer called Firebird) is out.

Looks (cosmetically) more like Safari...very clean and polished.

Errm... looks exactly the same to me as Firebird. Exactly.

Mind you, I ain't got a Mac.

Actually, I'm having trouble seeing what has changed, if anything.

It sounds like there are no cosmetic changes to the PC side, unlike what is described above.

I'm trying to grab some extensions for the 1st time, but like Rob, I'm experiencing what might only be attributed to a cabbage-patch-doll rush to the firefox help page -

I guess I'm lucky even to have downloaded the update...attempts to try again are met with clocking out.

Same here. The name was changed, plus it auto installed, but I saw no difference. None of my extensions worked, and to me the extensions are the lifeblood of Firebird/fox. The extension sites are being slammed and hard to get to, so I went back to 0.7 until I can get the extensions for Firefox that I need. I still fail to see what the changes were, other than the improved download manager, which doesn't do me much good.

On another note, I love the new logo, but was perplexed to see that it wasn't the default "spinning" icon on the browser

Well, i can tell its faster tha .7 loading pages, but there are a bunch of bugs that need to be worked out...

Some problems for me:
Loss of Foreward/Back buttons. Even when i tried to add it in, it wasnt there in the CUSTOMIZATION menu

No vertical scrollbar on the right.

Currently using Firebird 0.7

Can someone send me a link to an install
with an .EXE (I don't want to simply unzip the files).

In other words, I need a Windows installer version.

And....with some of the problems posted here, should
I actually install this over my existing version?

Thanks in advance

Ron, the only Windows version has the installer, I don't think there is a zipped Windows version this time.

After installing it, I noticed no real difference. If FB 0.7 works fine, I would wait on installing it. Barring that, I made a new folder and copied over the main FB folder and the Phoenix folder, then installed Firefox over the existing installation, after disabling all extensions.

At least in the mac environment, since this update is named Firefox, it's treated as a separate install, not a install-over...IOW, I deleted Firebird .7 separately.

Nick, I'm baffled by the loss of back/forward button (functionality). All the buttons/scrollbar work fine for me. In fact, it uses the previous .7's preferences/toolbar setup that I created.

Ron, 0.7 only comes as a .zip folder. Just unzip and place the folder into your C:Program Files folder. Make a shortcut ot the MozilaFirebird.exe file and you're done.
