I was wondering about the movies (hollywood and not IMAX) that they frequently show at the Cinesphere in Toronto. I know that the screen is 6 stories high and that for IMAX movies, they show it on the whole screen. How about for hollywood movies? They frequently use to play "The Matrix" and now "Pearl Harbor". When they show these movies, do they take up the whole screen? I heard that they only used a portion of the screen. Also, what kind of sound encoding do they use for these movies (ie. DD, DTS, SDDS).
Thanks

The Hollywood films are shown on the IMAX screen in their original aspect ratios. Yes, that means masking the top and bottom portions of the giant IMAX screen.
The same thing happens at your local cinema when the films alternate between 1.85:1 & 2.35:1. As for the sound encoding, they use whatever format that came with the print. If I'm not mistaken, they can screen all the various sound formats that you mentioned.
The truly great thing about the Cinesphere is their yearly 70mm film festival in Feb/Mar, allowing a rare chance to see many cinematic greats in true 70mm 6-Track Dolby sound.
Highly recommended!

Bill,
Have they announced yet what films they will be screening in 70mm? I've never seen a single film at a theater in something other than 35mm.
Thanks,
Seb
