I will be mounting 6 bookshelf speakers(6-1/2")as my 3 rear surround, 2 front & center channel. Do these size speakers generally sound better if I mount them with brackets or on a shelf vs. flat against the drywall? The center channel speaker needs to be on a shelf because it will be under projection screen. Thanks for any advice.

You could put them on shelves if you had to; I'd prefer them mounted flat against the wall, though.

The important thing to remember is that you don't want them "recessed back" on the shelf, or pushed back into a cubby hole on an entertainment center.

The sound waves from the speaker need to breathe and be able to escape freely out into the room in the general direction the speaker is pointing. Reflections from the shelves could mess up the sound considerably.
