Most compatible DVD player (1 Viewer)

Does anyone have an opinion of which brand (or even model) of DVD player is most likely to play the biggest variety of media types there are now?

I burn alot of my own video on different DVD media and have good luck with some players and bad luck with others. Is there any thought of which brands are more compatible with burned media? I need a new player for my upstairs system (using an OLD Toshiba that won't recognize any type of burned media), but want to keep the price less that $100 if possible.

Philips DVP-642....
For the money ....it's one of the better all around DVD/mp3/DIVX/XVid players out there.
