Over at Digital Bits, in their Classic Coming Attractions, they mention that MGM/UA will release two more musicals later this year - I Could Go On Singing (Garland) and Man of La Mancha;
A friend in the know tells me that Universal is working on a box of 8 Deanna dubin musicals. I think over time Universal should do three boxes of 8 - that would give us almost all of her films.
Warners also owns one - Its a Date
There seems to be one missing in action- Spring Parade. No one knows who owns this. Universal no longer has a negative, soundtrack, or even a print of this film.
We Can now add those to the pile of upcoming musicals
Half a Sixpence (Paramount)
IN the Good Old Summertime
Ziegfeld Girl
For Me and My Gal
Met Me in St.Louis
Cinderella - Julie Andrews
Star - Julie Andrews
Mary Poppins - remastered special edition ( Dear Disney Home Vid- can we finally have the prescreen Overture and the Intermission music you guys have NEVER put on any of the home vid versions?)

My hopes for the future:

PENNIES FROM HEAVEN (1981) MGM
THE BOY FRIEND (1971) MGM
LIL ABNER (1959) Paramount
DAWN OF SOUND -type box (pre '32 Vitaphone musicals,
other studios; Turner could do a bang up job with
this, as it did on laser; how about all those
Vitaphone shorts, too?)
BORN TO DANCE (1936) MGM
Eddie Cantor musicals (WHOOPEE! PALMY DAYS, KID MILLIONS etc. (Originally UA)

...all in good time, I hope.
:D

When I saw Man of La Mancha theatrically in the UK, the film began with interior shots of Peter O'Toole walking down the steps of the prison, to the dungeon. I was therefore surprised to see the film on TV recently which included lengthy exterior scenes prior to O'Toole's arrival in the prison. Which version was shown theatrically in the USA and which version will be on the DVD?

DouglasR - "Man of La Mancha" had a beautiful letterboxed/stereo transfer from MGM/UA on Laserdisc. The complete film with the extened opening and overture. Hopefully this is the version they'll use for the DVD.

CBS/FOX had released a Pan and Scan laser/VHS which had an ugly picture with film damage - especially in the first couple of reels.

Also coming "Finian's Rainbow" & "My Fair Lady" - Special Edition

Hoping Paramount will release "Oh What a Lovely War" this year.

A 2nd for "Flower Drum Song".

The laser is an abomination, mixed P&S and some stuff letterboxed.

I'm thrilled about Man of La Mancha. This is one of my favorite musicals of all time (whether on screen or stage). I got to see a live performance of it a couple years ago with the guy who sang the Love Boat theme in the lead role.

I'd also like to see some of the Eddie Cantor movies come to DVD, mainly because I've never seen anything of him except the Looney Tunes caricatures.

Scott, you're thinking of Jack Jones.

In terms of musicals, I want:

Annie (remastered 16x9 with actual extras, not kid's stuff)
Flower Drum Song
Happiest Millionaire (remastered roadshow, non-flipper)
The King & I (remastered SE)
Oklahoma! (remastered with both Todd-AO and Cinemascope versions)
Oliver! (SE, non-flipper)
The One and Only Genuine Original Family Band (restored to originally intended length if possible)
South Pacific (remastered and at the proper length, Joe you need to really lobby for this)
more Judy Garland
