I also have IL CONTE UGOLINO (1949) and BEATRICE CENCI (1956) on VHS, the viewing of which I have been postponing far too often.

Apart from his own quite stylish and entertaining movies, I guess we should be most grateful to Freda today for two reasons: for kickstarting the Italian Gothic Horror genre with I VAMPIRI (incredibly enough, the first "official" Italian Horror film) and for giving Mario Bava his belated chance to sit in the director's chair on the same movie. Like so many other veteran and emerging Italian directors, he dabbled in every conceivable genre which was fashionable at the time: swashbucklers, gothic horror, peplum, spy sagas, spaghetti westerns, gialli, etc.

His Horror movies are well-regarded - I rented a budget-priced triple-feature disc of THE GHOST (1963) while I was in Hollywood a year ago but the film just stopped suddenly some 10 minutes before the end:frowning:!! - and DOUBLE FACE is an early, terrific, largely unsung giallo. On the other hand, THE WITCH'S CURSE is another silly peplum which unaccountably transports Maciste in 17th Century England at the time of the witch-hunts! Similarly, TRAGIC CEREMONY might very well be the nadir of the giallo; Freda disowned the released version of the film - which is just as well since it is indeed laughably bad. You wouldn't believe the howls greeting TRAGIC CEREMONY at the 61st Venice Film Festival midnight screening I attended in 2004!!
