Basically, Di Leo is to Italian-made cop thrillers what Sergio Leone was to Spaghetti Westerns or Mario Bava to the Gothic Horror...so that it is very surprising that he is not so very well-known outside of his native country; in fact, only the last 2 of the above-mentioned films are available on R1 DVD.

Actually, even I myself only learned about him during my visit to the 61st Venice Film Festival in 2004 (which is where I got acquainted with 6 of the films in my list for the first time) but, by now, I have become quite a fan of his work - so much so that I'd be interested in catching every film he has ever made. Only SLAUGHTER HOTEL was a real let-down, a lamentably muddled attempt at a sexed-up giallo (complete with hardcore inserts) which also manages to waste a pitfully underused Klaus Kinski.
