Born in Winnipeg, Mr. Maddin's show business career began early when as a child he received a piggy-back ride from the immortal Bing Crosby. Maddin studied Economics at the University of Winnipeg. He worked as a bank teller and house painter before settling upon a career as a filmmaker. For his first three legendary features, Maddin worked in tandem with one of the world's best producers, Greg Klymkiw. Together, they were a powerhouse team. Maddin's father, Charlie, was the business manager of Canada's National Hockey Team. Curiously enough, Maddin's producer, Greg Klymkiw also had a father who played goal on the same team. Maddin continues to live and work in Winnipeg.
(reprinted from IMDB because it amused me)

Maddin is an independent Canadian filmmaker known for often making his films in a style that simulates silent moviemaking combining the American Griffith and Vidor styles with Expressionism, early sci-fi, and Soviet Montage. His films often involve unsuccessful love stories, often triangles.

*1. The Heart of the World - A (A critic said this film is like watching the history of moviemaking in 5 minutes, and I agree. Breathtaking, exciting, mind-blowing)
    2. Odilon Redon or The Eye Like a Strange Balloon Mounts Towards Infinity - A- (another fabulous effort is this short with its montages of indescribable images)
*3. The Saddest Music in the World - B+ (Funny and inventive feature length film set during the Depression in which the beer mogul of Winnipeg (Isabella Rosselini) holds a contest to find The Saddest Music in the World. This is the only Maddin I've seen in a theater so might partially explain why its the feature that worked best for me)
    4. Brand Upon the Brain! - B+
    *5. Sissy-Boy Slap-Party - B+
*6. Archangel - B (Strange dreamlike film in which an American soldier becomes obsessed with a local girl in 1918 Russia. Certain portions of this I love, particularly Maddin's short parody of a Soviet propaganda film. But the style wears me out towards the end.)
    7. Cowards Bend the Knee - B
    8. Careful - B

    9. The Dead Father - B-

    10. Tales From the Gimli Hospital - B-
    *11. Sombra Dolorosa - B-
    12. Dracula: Pages from a Virgin's Diary - C+ (Maddin's filmed ballet is often visually stunning but I just could not gain much appreciation for it. It feels inert and would probably be better seen on the stage.)
    *13. A Trip to the Orphanage - C
    14. Footsteps - C

    15. Hospital Fragment - C-
*16. Twilight of the Ice Nymphs - D (Featuring Shelly Duvall, I found this so wacky, off-putting and simplistic that it quickly became a "look at the time counter on the DVD player every 5 seconds" affair)

    Own: 7 (on 2 DVD's - 3 features, 4 shorts)

Brand Upon the Brain! is an utterly demented silent film about Guy Maddin's mis-remembered youth.
I was privileged to attend the premiere as a one-time only event featuring a live orchestra, live foley sound effects by 3 foley artists in white lab coats, live narration from Maddin regular Louis Negin and a sweet, angelic singing voice provided by a large fat man dressed as a Cossack!

    A blast!!
