The Panny XR25/45 were intersting to read about. I like the idea of slimmer and more efficient. Are there any more receivers of this type coming out from any of the manufacturers? The Panasonic receivers, and I believe there was another brand, were receivers which apparantly sounded surprisingly good. I have a Marantz SR6200 and high sound quality is important to me, so I'd be critical of the sound, but I'm curious if there is any trend in the digital amplifier direction. If its done right, I think its a good idea.

I read from the Newform research site that the Panny amp sounds very good and is cheap. Just curious, where can one pick up one of these amps, do you know?

HK is due to release soon 2 digital receivers; the DPR 1005 & DPR 2005. The only difference I can find between the 2 is that the 1005 is 70 watts & the 2005 is 120 watts.

    Rich,

Yes they are. There are at least 3 receivers STR-DA9000ES, 5000ES, 3000ES with digital amplifier stages. I don't recall if the 2000ES has one as well.

    Regards,

Notice the THD levels on these digital amps? Most are higher than analog amps by a significant margin. I think the Sony STR DA 1000 is analog (100 W) with a THD of .09% and the DA 2000 is digital (120 W) with a THD of 0.6%.

Higher distortion is the nature of the Class-D amp. That's why they have only been used to power subs where you can't hear the distortion like you can with mids and highs.

Although I consider myself critical, I don't live by specs alone anymore. THD of less than 1% is usually pretty good. All other things being equal, if you can tell the difference between 0.09 and 0.6% THD (about 0.5%) by listening, that would be impressive. But of course, all other things are never equal. We could argue all day about what the limits are. I'm hoping as there are more and more of these amps, the distortion will drop as the designs improve.

YAMAHA already has at least one out, something #200 & only available here in Silver I belive, ~{tho a progressive DVD player is on board.
100 x 5 I belive, with limited controls and hook ups compared to typical AVR's & also contains a built in fan on the rear.

Very thin and deep like the Panasonics. Actually thinner as I remember...
Their may be other digi Yamaha's currently out.

They are said to be working on pure digital powered stand alone AV-Receivers.

Someone else may have more specific information on them.

Again, I want sound quality too, but I'm happy to see stuff coming out. Hopefully it will be good. Fewer noisy fans too.
