Fox has announced that it is "Retiring" a large number of VHS and Laser Disc titles as of 9/13/02. The titles include All About Eve, Gentlemen's Agreement, How Green Was My Valley, An Affair To Remember, The Grapes of Wrath, Laura, The Day The Earth Stood Still, Viva Zapata, Anastasia, Inn of the 6th Happiness, Love Is A Many Splendored Thing, Mask of Zorro, Ghost & Mrs. Muir, The Ox-Bow Incident, and My Neighbor Totoro.

Hopefully we will see some of those on DVD soon!

Snuck in at the end of the list was an entry for a January 31, 2003 retirement of the DVD box set of all Alien series movies, Alien Legacy. If you want this in the box set, get it while it's hot! I hope I'm wrong, but I somehow doubt that by Christmastime you will find it very easily.

    "retiring Laserdisc titles"??

Boy, is their press department out in a time warp. Nobody's issued North American laserdiscs for two years. The Japanese pretty much packed it in after The Phantom Menace!

Fox's license on Totoro has expired, and Disney will be issuing domestic DVDs in the next 6 months

The HK Ghibli titles are not dub only nor cut

I expect them to be virtually identical to the current releases

Are fox still redoing Alien as a 5-star edition? If so does this mean we can expect 5 star reissues of the entire series (or maybe a 5-star box set ala Die Hard)?

Jeff, thanks for the note about Totoro. I meant to mention that and just got too sleepy to think about it. [IMG]

I think anyone rushing out to buy the Aliens Legacy box set will regret doing so in about a year or two.

Look what happened with the Planet of the Apex box set. It went on moratorium until the new movie came out. And now that there's talk of a new Aliens movie (I believe it was Aliens vs. Predator), I bet they'll be doing the same thing. Or, as DVD File says, they just have new special editions in the work.

Nope, I'll be holding out. I have Aliens on DVD, but I can certainly wait on the others.

All I have to say is that, if there are indeed new special editions of these films in the works, I certainly hope they include both the theatrical and director's cut of Aliens this time around.

I'm firmly of the opinion that more is not always better, and the director's cut of Aliens really screws up the pacing, slows down the film, and, in some cases, makes the acting uneven. Give me the theatrical cut every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

Mr Crawford, in the quote in your post the "Mask of Zorro" is shown. Is that actually supposed to be the 1940 "Mark of Zorro" with Tyrone Power? I'm hoping that it is the Power film.

Jeff, your question should be directed to me, as he was merely quoting my original post.

You are correct, sir. It IS "Mark Of Zorro". Not "Mask". My fingers got carried away, and I wasn't able to cut and paste, so I typo'd. Sorry about that, everyone.
