I tried searching, but I could not find anything. IIRC, was there not a problem with the original release of this DVD. Somebody mentioned this to me, but could not recall what it was. I have the original 2-disc Columbia special edition. Everything seems fine to me. Is there something I am missing?

    Thanks,

    Jason

Hmm, I have the two disc SE with the plastic slipcover and I've never had a problem with it. If you don't notice it anything wrong, then don't look for it. [IMG]

You're probably right! I don't think it was an issue of a disc-rot type error, but something along the lines of a brief bit of dialoge cut out or a brief part of a scene or something like that...

I believe there was a problem with the subtitles kicking on mid-program on some players...at least I think that was the problem...I have never had this problem with the disc so I can not confirm nor deny that this is/was the problem.

The movie is missing the first mock-Swedish subtitle. This is true of all DVD versions, as far as I know.

    ....or that
But I don't think that was the main complaint though.

It was the subtitles coming on. I know because I had to exchange my first-run copy of the 2-disc version, which was not the first DVD release of the move BTW.

With my defective disc, the subtitles would come back every chapter.

That's what I remembered, as well as the missing swedish sub's.....but the main technical complaint was the sub's coming on.

There was also a problem with THE MEANING OF LIFE combing madly throughout.

As already mentioned, the original 2-disc set had two issues:

    1. On some players, the subtitles would pop-up seemingly randomly. This did not occur on all players. (I believe this would occur at the places where the killer rabbit would pop-up.)
    2. The very first fake-Swedish subtitle is missing.

The first was corrected by locking out the ability to select subtitles on the fly (kind of a bummer with a movie like The Holy Grail, where I would like to be able to turn on subtitles at any time). The second problem was never corrected, including on subsequent releases.

The UK R2 Special Edition, which came out just a few months later, has the title of the film (MPATHG) in the fake Swedish subtitles.
In the US, the fake subs start right after the title.

True, but unfortunately, we suffer a far worse problem. The original mono track is missing! [IMG]

All the R2 has is the awful remixed, rejigged, re-recorded 5.1 mix, complete with different music and sound effects and re-done narration. The only other audio track is a 2.0 mixdown of that same audio track. Appalling.

This means that, unbelievably, as yet, there is no version of this film available anywhere in the world the includes both all the correct title sequence subtitles and the original mono track.

One hopes that, come HD-DVD, an untampered-with version finally sees release.

I have never liked the new 5.1 remix, Palin's newly recorded narration lacked the energy (or however you wish to phrase it) that the original had.
