Criterion's Monterey Pop, a planned 3-disc set, will feature performances by The Mamas & Papas, Canned Heat, Simon & Garfunkel, Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother And The Holding Company, The Animals and Country Joe And The Fish.

Music historian Peter Guralnick will provide two audio commentary tracks on the short documentary Shake: Otis at Monterey, also on Criterion set. The first commentary will be a song-by-song analysis of soul legend Otis Redding's Monterey performance, while the second will examine Otis' career pre- and post-Monterey. The Criterion edition of Monterey Pop is due later this year.

Patrick, please mention your source (which I'm assuming is http://www.criterionco.com, specifically the "News" section) when you post these tidbits.
I ask you to do this partly because it enables other HTF readers to know you're passing on good information (and not just rumour), and partly because not posting the source makes it plagiarism, even when -- as above -- you paraphrase some of the material.
    I'm not flaming, just asking...

    Yes!

I saw this excellent documentary when it first ran in commercial cinemas back in 1969.

There's a lot of footage that had to be left out, and it looks as if this marvelous set from Criterion will have it all.

Can't wait. Thanks for the news, Patrick.

This was Jimi Hendrix's breakout performance. I'll get it if its not overpriced.

I CANNOT wait for this! I do have one question. Is Hendrix going to be featured on the set? His presence is a major factor as far as purchasing this goes.

This may be worth picking up for the Otis Redding footage alone.I hope they can do justice to the sound quality

Sounds Great! I'll definately get it when it comes out. Jimi Hendrix's performance was awesome there. I've seen it a few times on TV.

I don't generally buy music stuff, but to have Hendrix and Big Brother and the Holding Company, it just might be worth it. My guess is the MSRP is going to come somewhere between $59.99 and $79.99.

Don't forget the amazing Ravi Shankar set which closes the original movie, and which IMHO is better than the rest of the performances put together (and some of the other performances are amazing).

Am I correct in assuming that the additional footage will be included as an extra feature and not edited into the film itself?

    I hope so anyway.

Officially announced for June are Tokyo Olympiad and Hearts And Minds. Nothing about Monterrey Pop yet.

The "official" MONTEREY POP announcement may no longer be up on the site (it was only on the homepage). But I copied it for future reference...
And, so far as I know, that's it for "official pronouncements" on the Monterey Pop Boxset!

My sentiments exactly! Methinks this has the potential to become one of Criterion's best-selling releases!
