I have it in my hands! DVD Region 1!

Unfortunately, there are some bad news as well for the fans of the movie when it comes to the features: only P&S and English audio track.

I will post later the full details of the DVD.

Yes, it was discussed quite awhile back.

Tokuma would not provide Fox with a new master and the OSL track, probably because of their deal with the Mouse unfortunately

No OAR, No OSL no sale!

Jeff said it pretty well. What a waste of a release. [IMG]

I'm trying to pretend this release never happened. [IMG]

    I am week!

My VHS copy is so worn out. If I am going to watch in P&S regardless, might as well watch it with the better quality that DVD offers.

No thanks, there's already a superior R1 version available.

Any timeline on when Disney gets this. IIRC it's 2004 right?

The FOX DVD is literally a recycled version of the old dubbed, pan-and-scan laserdisc. Children will still love this disc, but I can't say much more that is nice about it.

OK, at least it is uncensored (bath scene, which many people felt a western audience wouldn't 'understand').

It is indeed uncensored, just like the previous VHS release by Fox... The bath scene has not been removed.

Roger Ebert absolutely adores this film. I bet he'd be none to happy to find the Region 1 release was not OAR.
Perhaps Ebert has enough clout to get action done regarding such a travesty. (He has in the past.)

No action by Ebert or anyone else is probably needed. It's just a matter of time: as soon as the rights revert to Disney in 2004, we ought to be able to expect SE's of this.

Jeff, does everything else from Studio Ghibli also have to wait until 2004? Or will any of it be coming sooner than that?

    David,

Pretty much every thing else in the Disney-Tokuma deal could come out by late 2003 if Disney wanted. Kiki and Porco Rosso could come out now, Laputa could come out within months, Nausicaa could come out by the end of 2003 (not out in Asia yet).

    If Disney wanted...

Ebert has no power in this case. You have to wait for 2004 for proper Totoro.

The good news is that Laputa has been trailered on the latest Spider-Man cartoon collection from Disney. Given that Spirited Away has done outstanding business (just passed the $5 million mark with only 100 prints!) I'm guessing we'll be seeing Laputa and Kiki with Spirited Away's US release (March I hear).

They don't want to sabotage their Japanese sales with the cheaper US discs, so right now, what is up for release:

    Kiki's Delivery Service
    Laputa: Castle in the Sky
    Porco Rosso
    Whisper of the Heart
Pom Poko (Well, comes out in Japan in 2 weeks, so by March it should be fair game)
    My Neighbor Totoro (2004)
My Neighbors the Yamadas (Trust me, this will NEVER come out here, or if it does, it'll be LAST or through Criterion. This is a Takahata film)

Most people agree that they will release Nausicaa in Japan last, which puts it at 2004 at the earliest for the US

Jeff, you left off 'Only Yesterday', which strangely is just about out in Asia but unscheduled in Japan (and I don't see it getting released here any time soon regardless).

Nausicaa is slated for next year, along with Ghibli's new movie neko ga ongaeshi and the short short Ghiblies 2 movie. Studio Ghibli already has the cover art for everything that hasn't been released and Nausicaa looks really good. [IMG]
What I wish they would do is also release On Your Mark on DVD and Ghiblies 1 short movie as well.
I'll be picking up Laputa and Pompoko R2 in December.

On Your Mark is not held by Disney, and will probably be distributed by Universal like the other Chage & Aska videos. Usually they would license it to them for box sets.

    That's it!

I am sick and tired of waiting for Disney to release these films (Is it because they will show North American audiences that somebody else in the world is making better products than them?) in R1.

I am buying a free region player and buying the available Japanese versions.
