I can get the Mitsubishi 46807 for 1678.00 and the matching stand for 199.00. Sounds good so far? Yes. But the service contract is 500.00. Should I wing it and forget the contract? As a rule, I never get service contracts, but RPTV's seem kind of fragile. Any advice?

I just got my 46807 this past week. I bought the service contract(3 yrs). I dont' usually get service contracts either, but parts for an RPTV can be expensive. I bought one(contract)for my Sony 41" and used it a couple of times already(calibration).
Better to be safe than sorry. At least in this case.
