Since I last posted a thread of Missing Musicals on DVD many, many of the titles on that list have been released (some of which I never thought would see the light of day) There are still some missing in action:

Can-Can (FOX 1960) Frank Sinatra Shirley MacLaine

The Boy Friend (Warners hinted that it may be 2007)

Goodbye Mr Chips (Peter O-Toole) (Also 2007)

Mame (Lucy)

The Pirates of Penzance (I've heard Universal might release this in 2006)

Lost Horizon (1973) It has it's fans and it's not that bad, plus it sells for high $ on ebay)

Porgy and Bess (Don't know what's holding this one up anymore. Apparently it has to do with the condition of film elements since the Gershwin estate seems to be willing)

Song of Norway ABC/Disney?) Okay this one is bad but it probably looks great in widescreen (70mm)

Stop the World I want to get Off (Warners)

Kismet (1955) Warners

A Litte Night Music (Image Entertainment was going to release this one but the film elements were in pretty bad shape so thay passed)

"Flower Drum Song" and "Oh! What a Lovely War" are set for a Nov 7th release date!

I'm sure I missed many titles.

There are still many MGM musicals that have not seen the light of day.

Fox - April Love, Centennial summer, Best Things in Life are Free

Universal- more Deanna Durbin please.

Paramount - crosby - Mr. Music

BTW - when I produced Lost Horizon for Laserdisc, it had such a big fan base that it was one of our best sellers !!!

I'll add five more from the 1950s:

Columbia - You Can't Run Away From It (1956)

MGM - The Student Prince (1954)

Paramount - The Vagabond King (1956)

20th Century-Fox - New Faces (1954)

Warner Bros. - Where's Charley? (1952) (along with "Porgy and Bess," it's the one I'm most curious to see)

When I was producing Pioneer Special Editions laserdisc, I tried to license You Can't Run Away from It, but was told I could not because of music rights problems.

Fox does not own New Faces anymore.

Warners has music rights problems with Where's Charley.

Lost Horizon was broadcast on HD-Net, in High-Definition. Curiously, it's got a mono soundtrack (this particular print), but the picture is terrific.

I do wish the movie were better, but oh well.

I've got it recorded on my DVR, in case anybody wants it...

I'd love to see every single title that has been mentioned thus far on this thread.

I've bored other threads with my hopes for second tier MGM musicals to be released at some point, so I won't list them all again.

How about WITH A SONG IN MY HEART?

I hear that With a Song in My Heart is tied up with endless music rights problems. Fox legal could always get to work on this, but would Fox consider this worth the time and the mo0ney to do so? I doubt it.
Too bad. Susan Hawyard is wonderful in this, as is the singing voice of Jane Froman.

Danny Kaye did a bunch of musicals (which I think are owned by MGM now, so would that be Fox?) that it would be nice to see on DVD.

My favorite missing musical is MGM's DEEP IN MY HEART from 1954 or was it 55?...this wasn't even given a CD release, although several tracks have turned up on some of the Rhino compilations.

The musical GOODBYE MR CHIPS (as mentioned) would be my next pick.
Filmscore Monthly put out a fabulous 3 CD set this year...so, where is the movie?
(sigh)

Speaking of.......what are the release dates for the
special editions of CAROUSEL, KING AND I and SOUTH PACIFIC?
They've been much discussed here, but i can find no true release dates for the US

Madam Satan

Directed by Cecil B. DeMille, almost ruined his career back in 1934, and the second half takes place on a Zeppelin! A masquerade ball on a Zeppelin which tears loose from the mast in a storm, combined with a plot about a philandering husband. It's insane, and I think it ought to be released to video (it may have been on VHS once, but I don't think on LD).

Joe Lugoff, They are all favorites of mine, so I second your excellent requests.
Especially NEW FACES.

Joe Caps, do you know who now owns NEW FACES?

Fox's affiliate Video company KEY VIDEO? once released an official version of New Faces on VHS in Letterbox/Stereo and although I have never seen a copy of it, I would give almost anything to get a hold of a copy.
Anything other than the attrocious quality Public Domain versions. ( Especially Critic's Choice abysmal mess)

Columbia seems to have stopped Classic releases, so You Can't Run Away From It sadly looks a lost cause.

April Love and The Best Things in Life Are Free are also very high on my wants list.

I also hope that WB will follow it's own lead when the laser disc MGM Composers boxed set was released and issue "Deep In My Heart" on DVD in anamorphic/stereo. The musical arangements, performances are not to be missed! It's a great example of what that giant studio was capable of...even at the end of the musical MGM era.

Please, WB...!

A very impressive line-up indeed. Kudos to Fox, and equally if not moreso to the Rodgers & Hammerstein organization. I know that Theodore Chapin and his staff at R&H are VERY involved in the creation of these releases, and were especially stung by the technical deficiencies that were the OKLAHOMA Todd-AO debacle. Something of which they were unaware of before release, so I've been told.

For those unaware, a lot of the non-film-version archival footage comes directly from R&H. Sometime in the early 50s, General Foods sponsored a TV "spectacular" saluting R&H. and thereby preserving (on kinescope) Mary Martin and Ezio Pinza, Yul Brynner and Patricia Morrison (who replaced Gertrude Lawrence in "KING' after her untimely death), and John Raitt and Jan Clayton from CAROUSEL.

Usually the cost of using television appearances of Broadway performers to be used on DVDs are so egrigious that they can't be used. Thakfully here, R&H controls the music, owns SOUTH PACIFIC outright, and has a large financial percentage of KING and CAROUSEL, so it was in their best interest to provide that footage.

What a treasure trove these releases are going to be.

Great news for a Monday!

And yet I fear, based on what happened with OKLAHOMA!, that the transfers may leave something to be desired. They never seem to get these movies exactly right! Maybe they want us fans to buy them over and over and over and over ........

We get Judy/Rooney musicals and The Pirate next year and hopefully they release some Eleanor Powell films as Rosalie, Lady Be Good, the Broadway Melodies, and Born to Dance.

I hope the aspect ratios listed are mistakes. Carousel should be 2.55:1, The King and I should be 2.55:1, and South Pacific should be 2.2:1.
