Purusing Wikipedia, one thing I found facinating is that the bridge opened November 1967. The bridge was almost exactly 40 years old. All the articles I've read over the last decade about our aging infrastructure predicted major problems once the Interstate Highway System launched by Eisenhower in 1956 crossed the magic half-century mark. We're 51 years from when the legislation was signed. Is this the beginning?

Naturally, because the Golden Gate is a national landmark. The George Washington Bridge got a $1.7 billion restoration for its 75th birthday last year from the Port Authority for the same reason.

The iconic structures will stand the test of time, because they're sexy enough to attract investment.

Most of the system just can't get that money. The 35W bridge was probably doomed by how sheerly unremarkable it was.
