A friend of mine is in the market for a used/refurbed laptop (under $500 if possible) that would be able to play DVDs. What would be the minimum processor/speed/ram requirements? TIA!

Most DVD software recommends a PIII 400 MHz or greater for minimal playback. RAM isn't that much of a factor, but I think 64Mb is the minimum. I got great results with that same configuration on a Compaq work laptop I used to have.

For anything less on the processor side, Margi offers a PCMCIA MPEG2 card that can be used for DVD playback. I use one of them on my PII 300 MHz machine and it works great. They aren't in production anymore but can be had from Ebay or a used laptop store like Laptopworld.com.
