I currently have an Onkyo 898 driving my Def Tech speakers (2004tl's, CLR 2500, BP2X's) and wanted to begin my migration to separates with an amp or two. I've been drawn to the Odyssey Stratos (3+2), but have also read good things about McCormack, or perhaps even the Sim Audio Moon (a bit more, but worth it?).

HT is my main interest, but music is important too. I'm looking to spend $2,500 - $3,500 on a 5.1 (7.1 later).

I'm willing to spend more if it takes me to another demension, so to speak, but if not, I'd like to keep it around there.

well in that price range you can do very well, even better if you're willing to go to the used market. i can't specifically state what new amps to look into but at your price point some of the used / demo amps you might wanna consider include:
aragon 8008bb (~$1300-$1500 used) + 8008x3b (~$1500-$1700 used) (my own personal setup :))
aragon 8008x5 (~$2000 used)
aragon palladium monoblocks (~$2200-$2500 used) + acurus a200x3 (~$500-$700 used)
classe cav-150 (~$1800-$2000 used)
classe cav-180 (not sure on the price, this replaced the 150 but it'll be in your $3500 range i'm sure)
ead powermaster 1000 (~$1900-$2200 used)
ead powermaster 2000 (~$2700-$3000 used)
proceed amp5 (~$2500-$2900 used)
good luck and enjoy the hunting!
