My main problem with Pearl Harbor is what happened after the Pearl Harbor attack and the main characters being fictitious to begin with. It's my humble opinion that they trivialize the actual battles and the people that survived and died in those battles. It's one of the reasons why "Gettysburg" is among my favorite all-time movies as it didn't trivialize the actual battle as it tried to maintain its historical accuracy.

    How? I’m genuinely curious.

Titanic was similar in that regard which is why the Pearl Harbor producers and writers went that route.

It certainly didn’t hurt Titanic. ;)

It didn't hurt it financially. Whether it hurt it creatively is certainly debatable.

I just didn't care for it as I watched Pearl Harbor in a movie audience with elderly veterans wearing their decorations. It rubbed me the wrong way. I'm not saying I didn't enjoy Pearl Harbor, it's only a movie, but I did wonder how those WWII vets thought of it in my opening day movie audience. I have to admit, it bothered me.

Interesting I had the opposite experience, I saw it opening day with my father who was a WWII vet and my audience loudly applauded when the movie was over. I could have done with a little less romance but thought it was excellent overall and the battle itself mostly accurate as was the battle in the 1976 midway. I was surprised to see all the negative comments on the movie after as I still remember how it grabbed the audience I saw it with. I still enjoy the movie.
I am looking forward to the new Midway as long as the battle itself is pretty factual and shows both sides I will be happy with it. Since the 1976 movie accomplished those elements I would expect the same here but we'll see.

I will definitely watch this. I hope they stay true to most of the history of the battle, which is dramatic enough.

My biggest hope is this release finally gets the 1976 film's extended cut released on some physical format. Guess the added scenes were made for TV but I'd love to have the Coral Sea battle finally... :)

I actually liked Pearl Harbor okay. I saw it opening day as well. It is kind of silly that the main characters are fighter pilots and end up being part of Doolittle's Raiders but I'm willing to suspend my belief. The attack sequence on Pearl was tremendously filmed.

Actually, Emmerich has made 2 "serious" movies in recent years: "Anonymous" and "Stonewall"...

So, there is that .1% chance it could be good...so there is hope. Granted this guy's track record does not inspire much confidence that he will churn out a classic...but he might have learned a thing or two over the years and make something pretty good.

I'm no fan of any of his other films but he's been handed a big budget and an interesting topic.

Emmerich is much worse as a writer than director, and he didn't write this one, so...

"Pearl Harbor" turned to complete shit for me as soon as that scene with the P-40 playing "Chicken" with a Zero was barfed on to the screen. Before that it was only mostly shitty. To be honest, I cannot believe that I bought the DVD of it. I must have been out of my mind at the time.

U may had bought the theatrical version that's 90% a popcorn flick with 10% historical references.
I got both the theatrical version as well as the Vista Collection with minor extra of additional 2% historical references.

...and yeah... it's still not comparable to ToraToraTora.

I worked in a Suncoast at that time and lots of people were buying any movie that was going to be a "good" DVD. If it was a new action movie with a 5.1 mix, it sold well.

That is a pretty good point. There is probably more than one film that I bought more for mix than the actual film. U571 is a perfect example. That movie is terrible; however, at that point in time, it had one impressive sonic punch with the depth charge scene that traveled around the room from speaker to speaker. I could never bring myself to upgrade from the DVD though. Not even the mix was worth repurchasing the film on Blu-ray.
