If I remember correctly Take-Two is the publisher of the title. I may be wrong though. Maybe BrianB can help us on this as he has worked on the first two GTA games from what I hear.

Ah..well that makes sense now. Thank you Brian for that clarification.

By the way what are your thoughts on the report? Just curious.

Brian, wouldn't they be taking the company that makes the hottest game for the PS2 and put it in their own stable? You said in another thread the XBox is just a secondary concern for them right now, but if MS buys them, that would change in a hurry. It would be a good move on MS's part and make the XBox more successful.

Short of actually buying Sega or EA, I think it would be the best company they could buy to make games.

    What do you think?

No too mention the fact that Take-Two also handles Max Payne and the up coming Duke Nukem Forever. I could see Microft touting an X-box exlcusive Duke Nukem (if it ever comes out for PC that is[IMG]).
My only other question is how would this affect the PS2 version of GTA3 or Max Payne. I highly doubt that Microsoft would stop production of these games for the PS2 (it is microsoft though[IMG]). I know it is quite far fetched but it kind of makes you wonder.

AFAIK, Max Payne & Duke Nukem, although published by Take Two (via GodGames etc), the intellectual property of them is still owned by 3D Realms. Take Two do not have carte blanche to do with them as they like.

Basically, Take Two are a publisher with really only two dev houses AFAIK - DMA in Edinburgh, and Rockstar in Canada (who are handling the PS2 port of Max Payne). I know they own, or at least, used to own, a gameboy dev specialist too, back in the UK.

Apart from them, Take 2 have a habit of buying up 20% stacks in developers - enough to have a say in the company's future, enough to increase potential ownership (as what happened with GOD), but not enough to outright /own/ them. There's a few teams in this position - tied to Take Two, but not owned by them.

Financially: Take 2 have a /large/ inventory of stock - larger than most publishers of their size and there's ongoing rumours of on-going SEC investigations.

It's an interesting proposition. Again, I don't think it'll happen myself. I've seen rumours like this before - Microsoft to buy Eidos, Infogrames to buy Eidos etc.

I just plain hope MS doesn't buy them. I would prefer them to be independent or not exist at all.

Well, I really see this as the way that MS is going to win this race. They're starting behind everyone else, and although they have the technological advantage over Sony, their timing is not quite as fortuitous. If they happen to buy up a bunch of Developers/Publishers though, they suddenly have more exclusives. I wouldn't put it past them to buy Take2 and quickly cancel the Ps2 versions of Duke and Max Payne, no matter how far along they are. I know it's a different circumstance, but Munch was reportedly 80-90% complete for the Ps2 before it moved to the Xbox.

    As I thought.

Did some checking - there's a thread about this on EvilAvatar.com, and George Brussard (the owner of 3DRealms) has stated that each deal they do is: "one game at a time". They've said this before.

So, Take Two have no longterm rights to Max Payne or Duke Nukem. Microsoft wouldn't 'own' them by buying Take Two.

I got the number of devteams owned by Take 2 slightly wrong as well - they own PopTop & Talonsoft too, as well as TakeTwo Canada & DMA.

Buying Psygnosis is not as big of a deal as buying Bungie and Take-Two. Sony may have done some things to get their foot in the door, but MS is just using a batterring ram to get in.

I like console exclusivity, but not when all the good exclusives are on the same console.

How can you like exclusivity and NOT like all the exclusives being on the same console? Personally, I'd be happy if Sony and Nintendo said tomorrow that they were stopping production, and that everyone would be producing for the Xbox. One console-one architecture, and lots of software. It'd be like hte NES days again...

I said in another thread that buying exclusivity for a game or two is one thing, but buying out a whole company is just too much. I want there to be competition, because if there isn't, then only one company has control over everything. Why do you think some things are so cheap? Because of competition.

I don't want MS to buy out Take-Two. I would prefer that they stay a third party developer and develop for who they choose to.
