I can't believe it.
I really loved the Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves soundtrack and a lot of the X-Men music (especially the moment at the end of the Liberty sequence).
Rest in Peace, Mr Kamen

R.I.P. Mr. Kamen.

He added a great deal to the impact of Pink Floyd's "The Wall" with his brilliant orchestral arrangements.

This is truly sad news. I went through my teenage years listening to a lot of Queensryche (which I still listen to, actually), and I'm sure many of you know that Michael Kamen was involved in the orchestrations on many of their albums. While that was my first exposure to him and his work, it wouldn't be the last. Like many here, the score to "Brazil" sticks out most in my memory as being a truly wonderful moment in music scores.

Rest in peace, Michael. You will be missed.

When I read this online I immediately recognized the name, but didn't realize that he had scored some of my favorite movies (DIE HARD, LETHAL WEAPON). RIP.

Indeed, one of the most talented modern composers is sadly no longer with us. So much of his work is powerful and memorable.

"his score for Edge of Darkness with Clapton was incredible (is there a CD available anywhere?)."

By FAR the most emotional piece of orchestra music I have EVER heard. I too would like to know where this could be found. I have Eric Claptons 24 Nights and they have a side of 1 CD dedicated to Edge of Darkness. Quite an amazing peice of music to say the least.

Michael you will be missed dearly. R.I.P.

I was looking at the "Registered" date. That exchange was just a few days ago. Apparantly he took quite an interest in the message board. If I'd known I would have asked him about working with Kate Bush long ago.

I'm so used to "official" web sites being totally useless to actual fans. I'm so sorry I didn't check it out before now.

wow thanks Vicky. The response of MK to the fan is truly awesome, and might be one of the last things he said/ wrote

His work for Brazil was also very impressive

I'm actually really hit hard by this. The Dead Zone is one of my favourite films of all time, and even though he could be accused of recycling, the theme is still one of the saddest, most haunting things I heard. That scene where Walken is with the young boy walking outside the garden in winter, the accomponiment was fantastic.

I also think his work on X-Men was severely underappreciated. It's no mean feat to take an old-school sci-fi theme, reinvent it, and when need be, pepper it with warmth, and make it work. The mystique theme was bemusing and sexy.

I didn't care for his work on Prince of Theives but even Alan RIckman sucked in the movie.

He is featured in the Roger Daltry at Carnegie Hall DVD. He was directing the orchestra that performed during the performance. I really enjoyed his soundtrack compositions.

I am also bummed, because I will be turning 55 in a couple of months. With John Ritter, that is two famous people close to my age who have recently passed away.

While I'm not a huge fan of most film music, I think Kamen's work on Metallica's S&M is nothing short of brilliant. I also like the fact that I just typed the words "S&M is nothing short of brilliant."

Seriously, it was Kamen who made the performance. As far as I am concerned, even though he was working with previously created compositions, he is the one who accomplished the seemingly impossible. It's a remarkable piece of work.

Vickie_M:

that's one of the most poignant posts I've ever read, given the facts and circumstances.

Band of Brothers takes on new meaning for me (and I thought it was perhaps the greatest made-for-TV movie series ever, before!).

Thanks for sharing that link.
