Were Paramount not supposed to have released Michael Mann's THE KEEP by now? Is there no news on this?

There's got to be a thread on this somewhere already....

Last report was that Mann was recutting, but that report is from a few years ago. It was on a schedule at one point, but given Paramount's abhorence of catalog DVD releases... well, maybe in Australia or something....

Wow, he's recutting? I never heard that. It looks like one of those movies you file under "interesting failure", so I'd love to see what Mann considers a final cut of The Keep.

Something with a story or an ending, hopefully. That rarely seen TV version has an ending that's far better than the theatrical print for starters and goes on for several minutes (from the place where the theatrical cut freeze-frames).

Indeed, and it's rather more faithful to the book - though I maintain you really need to have read "The Keep" to actually know what is going on, other than that, the film is a fine but confusing piece of art ...

I saw the film first which brought me to the book (and it's sequels)...which is no bad thing.

There's a French site with a lot of information about the film, and the various deleted scenes and alternative versions that have been shown on TV channels.

    The English version is here:

Mann loves recutting. He's recut everything for DVD except "The Insider," "Collateral," and "Heat."

    Even "Thief"--from the laserdisc recut--is a "director's cut."

I doubt he could fix "The Keep," but I wonder what he cut, considering Paramount sold the picture as the last ten minutes of "Raiders" as a feature film....

'The Keep' is clearly one of the ten worst films ever made! I hope that Mr.
Mann keeps it FAR FROM any living person.

I've always loved The Keep. I'd gladly plunk down some cash for the DVD.

But then what one person loves another hates.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean to say that it shouldn't be released onto DVD for other people's enjoyment.

It wouldn't be a compulsory purchase, you know.

I happen to think that it's a lousy, confusing adaptation but it;s enjoyable as a piece of art. Certainly one of the most atmospheric films I've seen with some great visuals and music by Tangerine Dream.

I was thinking the same thing.

(See the New Alexader DVD thread for the proper context.)

I really like Mann and I think it would be interesting to see this film.

No, No...this isn't the same as 'Alexander' for I think so little of 'The Keep'
that I strongly suggest the original camera negative should be burned. It's
beyond horrid. Michael Mann will spend a few days in a very warm place for
making it before he can go to heaven. By the way, I've read that Mann himself
pulled the release last fall because of how much he hates the film.

I have seen part of the movie on TV (with an ending different from the theatrical) and the theatrical version a few different times. I have also read the book and I would love to see a proper DVD of THE KEEP. So no hurry as long as they don't screw it up.

Where--and how does Mann have that kind of weight?

Tell us what you really think. No need to hold back on our account. Go ahead and take that crap on it if you want. Really!

It's not the same as ALEXANDER? Actually you're right, THE KEEP -- as problematic as it is -- is a far more watchable movie than Oliver Stone's train wreck.

And you read about Mann pulling that release...where, exactly?

Oh, please! 'The Keep' is a crime against humanity, whereas 'Alexander' is
the best epic made in 40 years! Mann pulling 'The Keep' DVD news was on
several sites in recent weeks, but I can't recall where at this moment.

I suggest we ignore the bizarre thread-crapper. I first saw this film when it was first released and, whilst not the most engaging piece of art story wise, it was great fun nonetheless. I'd certainly buy it if it was released.
