Imagine, if you will, a 3-week period during the January-to-February transition, where we get MacGyver, then Charmed, then Miami Vice. Oh my God, it's really happenning!!!
Maybe I'm missing something here, but where does it say that the original songs are included? The artists mentioned above are fantastic, sure, but you can watch the re-cut episodes from TNN, USA, etc. and still hear these artists. In many cases, the song may be well known and correct for the 80's, but was it the song originally aired with the epidode in 1984? No. I'm guessing that all of the original songs are NOT included, or else Universal would be making a big deal about it. :frowning:
...each episode's page has specific music information. From the description from Universal, all of the artists listed are indeed featured in Season 1 episodes.
This site even has a song page that lists all the songs alphabetically with the episode it was featured in.
I can't vouch for the accuracy of the information on these web sites but they've been compiled over the years so I would trust them.
But when the DVD comes out, we can all check the music with the song lists on this site (if it's still there in February 2005).
It does seem somewhat odd that they wouldn't advertise that they include all of the original music. But the notice does list all the most prominent artists from Season One. I suppose its possible that they substituted a more obscure song by, say, Phil Collins, for the better-known one, but I'm inclined to think that such is not the case.
I've never understood the whole music rights issue. To put Miami Vice on DVD, Universal is not just calling Phil up to get his permission are they? They are calling Phil up to tell him how much they'll pay him for his permission to use the original music for the DVD release. Correct?
Help me if I'm off here, but why would an artist turn that down or refuse persmission if they are going to get paid.
BTW, I'm not picking on Phil, just using him as a hypothetical example.
Now I want a show of hands for all you peeps that had a Crockett outfit in the closet (I mean the pants, the shoes, the jacket)!! C'mon fess up .......
I did (I think mine was a pastel blue color as I recall)
It's usually about how much they'll get paid. There isn't a set price to license a song, so if the rights holder asks for too much then the song is cut. If I'm asking $50,000 for the use of my song on the DVD they might find something similar for $5,000 and be done with me.

I guess this is just further proof that people in the entertainment business don't live in the real world. So you are saying someone calls up Phil (again, hypothetical) and says "Phil, we'd love to have your permission to use the original version of 'In The Air Tonight' on the dvd release of the first season. How about $10,000 for saying yes?" You're telling me he'd say "No, I want $50,000" for doing absolutely nothing?
I realize this is an over simplification, but I would think as much as people in the entertainment business love notoriety and publicity that having their music re-released and then get paid for it on top of that would be a no brainer.
But what do I know. Evidently Ben Affleck didn't want or need his tax cut last year. I enjoyed mine.
It's not Phil Collins per se, because artists don't normally own the recordings (Unless you're Bruce Springsteen or Ray Charles), but the record companies and their lawyers who are looking to get paid. I've always thought that the rights-holders would absolutely kill to get some almost free exposure for all the now-back-catalog titles used in Miami Vice.
I would love to see licensing deals that include promotional materialon the DVDs for the music. I'd have no problem if there was a musical trailer on the DVDs (not forced mind you) that included clips of songs and information on who owns them and what CD the song is on. I liked that A&E included the music information on the Homicide sets, and I'm surprised other companies haven't done the same.
Gord, on what you said. They could do what happens after certain WB shows. Where they promote the album of the band whose music was on that particular show.
I think that we gonna heard a original music, conducted and composed by Jan Hammer. First, we waiting so long to see Miami Vice on DVD. Every time, some guys from Universal say to us: you know, we working for music rights, because we want to have all legall right for music in Miami Vice. Now, many years after, for the first time, we have a chance to bring Miami Vice in ours DVD Collection, and I think that's gonna be with original music. No doubt. But, we're gonna wait February 5, 2005!!!
Sorry Gord, but I gotta point out what Randy Salas is always saying: everyone's talking about how much the ARTIST wants for their songs, and your response didn't gainsay that. But the artist is rarely the hold-up. Usually a third party holds the rights to a song (for Beatles songs, it's Michael Jackson...yes, THAT Michael Jackson, unless he's had to give them up due to his money probelms).
It's the rights-holder, or the music publisher (who is NOT the artist's label usually), that is the one asking for the money here. Phil has nothing to do with it.
With regards to the new (posted 1/8/05) article of David Lambert's on tvshowsondvd.com on Miami Vice, and Universal (itself quoting a new Video Business article)...
The 'may have music changes' disclaimer (as found on Las Vegas box) is ridiculous, and I hope it doesn't become a standardized thing, since it's meaningless... the sets DO or they DON'T... 'may'... 'well, we're not sure'...
Quantum Leap 2 and Northern Exposure 2 and their replacement music:
>> Mayer denied the replacements were made in order to cut costs as the franchises continued.
>> "No, we maintain the quality," she said. "We would rather not put something out. We maintain a consistent quality for all our products."
I think that's WORSE than the oft-heard "We couldn't afford it" defense... it's NOT because it was too expensive, it's that they didn't want to lose momentum on the strong first season sales?! 'Timing issues' more than anything else. Grrrr....
Meanwhile, happy Miami Vice 1 will be intact and crossing fingers for 2-5...
