    from todays's update http://www.thedigitalbits.com/rumormill.html
Another MGM update this morning. Sources are telling us that among MGM's tentatively slated DVDs for 2003, you'll find Akira Kurosawa's Rhapsody in August, the 1939 Wuthering Heights and (as mentioned previously) Wim Wender's Wings of Desire. MGM recently obtained the rights to Wuthering Heights from HBO and released the film on VHS. This should come as good news to those of you who have been looking to pay upwards of $150 for the now out of print HBO DVD on Ebay.
Speaking of Kurosawa, we understand that his Kagemusha is under consideration for future DVD release from 20th Century Fox. Criterion is expected to release almost everything earlier than Dodes'ka-den. And don't forget that Wellspring's (formerly Fox Lorber) new anamorphic widescreen re-issue of Ran is due in 2003. Now if we could just get Warner to release Dreams, we'd be all set. Hint, hint...

excellent news indeed and start saving as well

Cool news about Wuthering Heights. I was able to rent the HBO disc from the library and I liked the movie very much.

Thanks Oscar! I'll pick up all of those, but I especially like Rhapsody in August. I think I'm one of the few people who did...

Mark, the box set you ordered comes out in September, but the individual disc isn't supposed to be available until next year in R1.

Um...Kurosawa never made a movie called "Rhapsody in Blues", it's "Rhapsody in August". You must have been thinking of Gershwin! [IMG]

    To SteveGon:

You are certainly not the only one who likes Rhapsody in August; it is an excellent film. The writer of the recent dual biography of Kurosawa and Mifune, "The Emperor and the Wolf," views it (if memory serves) as one of Kurosawa's great films.

But Ted, weren't the reviews of the R2 release of Kagemusha very poor? That's what I remember anyway and the reason I didn't already buy it months ago.

Does anyone know if MGM acquired any of the other stuff besides Wuthering Heights that used to be controlled by Samuel Goldwyn Home Entertainment/HBO?

I'm particularly interested in the Korda productions/co-productions that were in that package, like Thief of Bagdad, That Hamilton Woman, The Four Feathers, etc.

    thanks

    Brook,
I posted about it in a UK oriented forum, and the only known defect of the UK Kagemusha was having hearing impaired subtitles instead of normal ones. There were conflicting reports on the rest -- the person who answered me said the picture and sound were fine...
The French DVD is clearly different (it has subtitles in four languages including English). It got a very good review from a magazine I trust. However, I am still waiting to make sure that it has a normal English sub track. I may have to post on some French forum to find out...

Thanks Ted, now I remember. I'll be interested to find out about the French disc's subs too.
